REISTERSTOWN, Md. – The Stevenson women's ice hockey team (0-1) dropped its season opener to SUNY Canton (1-0), 3-1, on Friday afternoon.
After a scoreless first period, the Roos broke through with a shorthanded goal at the 11:19 mark of the second. SUNY Canton added another tally in the 17th minute to take a 2-0 lead heading into the final frame.
The Roos extended their advantage midway through the third period with a power-play goal to make it 3-0. Stevenson's Emma DeMan responded at 16:00 with the Mustangs' lone goal, assisted by Abby Smith. Despite a late push, the Mustangs came up short, falling 3-1.
DeMan led the offense with a goal and four shots, while Smith added an assist and three shots on goal. Goaltender Maggie Sehnert made 38 saves in her first start of the season.
The Mustangs will look to bounce back on Saturday as they host SUNY Canton once again. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m.
