FREDERICKSBURG, Va. –
Kellyann Coccia's goal with two seconds left in the third overtime lifted Stevenson (5-4) to a 10-9 win over Mary Washington (3-7) Friday afternoon in women's lacrosse play.
The Mustang withstood two Eagle rallies to take the win, holding the Eagles scoreless over the final 7:41 of the fourth quarter and the three overtime periods.
Erin Steinberg had four goals, with
Kara Yarusso having three. Coccia scored twice whle
Ava Treakle netted one goal. Yarusso had two assists on the evening.
Sophia Murray had six draw controls for Stevenson, with Yarusso having five and Treakle getting two. Murray, Yarusso,
Isabelle VanEmburgh each had two caused turnovers with Murray and
Melina Primrose getting four ground balls each.
In goal,
Regan Torbert had six saves in 69 minutes, while
Anna Johnston had 2:50 of action.
Trailing 3-2 in the first quarter, Stevenson went on a 4-0 scoring run to go up 6-3 as Coccia tied the score with 5:02 left in the first. Yarusso would score back-to-back goals in the second quarter, followed by a Steinberg goal with 4:14 left in the second for a 6-3 lead.
Mary Washington would battle back to tie the score at 8-all, before Steinberg scored another extra-man goal with 8:36 left in the fourth to take a 9-8 lead.
Stevenson will host Rowan on Thursday, before opening MAC Commonwealth play against Eastern next Saturday.
