Men’s Volleyball sweeps New Paltz and Kean, ends week 3-0

UNION, N.J. - Stevenson Men's Volleyball headed to Kean University this afternoon for the Cougars' annual Clash at Kean tournament. The Mustangs would first shutout SUNY New Paltz before taking down the Cougars 3-1.

Stevenson's offense against New Paltz was headed by junior Tim Flanagan, who hit .500 for a game-high 19 kills. Following Flanagan were first year Anthony Pezzino and junior Ryan Thenell with nine and eight kills, respectively. Thenell tallied a game-high four service aces. Senior Justin Novoa was responsible for all 43 of the Mustangs' assists.

Flanagan notched another game-high four blocks while senior Aidan O'Brien and graduate student Elliot De La Torre trailed with three each. Defensively, first year Tanner Laukhuff tallied nine digs, followed by Pezzino with eight and Thenell with six.

The set scores for the Mustangs against New Paltz were 25-17, 25-23, and 25-19.

In the second match of the day, the Mustangs and Cougars would go four sets (25-22, 16-25, 28-26, 25-15). Tim Flanagan produced another 26 kills while Aidan O'Brien finished with 11. Elliot De La Torre finished with a game-best .500 hitting percentage as well as a team-high three blocks. Justin Novoa was credited with 53 assists.

The Mustangs were busier defensively against Kean, with Anthony Pezzino notching a game-high 23 digs, followed by Tanner Laukhuff with 15 and both Tim Flanagan and Ryan Thenell with ten apiece.

The pair of wins, in combination with last night's blanking of Roanoke College, put the Mustangs at an even 3-3 record this season. They look to keep the streak alive with their next game on Friday, February 9th at 7 p.m. when they host Southern Virginia University.
