NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Stevenson University men's lacrosse team dropped its first game of the young season on Saturday, falling to fourth-ranked Christopher Newport 14-9.
Darrell Curtis and
Max Racich had two goals each, while
Gavin Gossen,
Jack Scaliti,
Grant Zick,
Andrew Searing and
Hunter Bryant all scored for the Mustangs (1-1).
Zick and Searing both collected two assists with
Dillion Linhardt also getting a helper on the afternoon.
Jack Seals had four ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers, with
Ryan Quinn,
Justin Tepper and
Nicholas Mulvey each earning two takeaways.
In goal,
Justin Scorese had eight saves.
Stevenson kept pace with the Captains (3-0) in the first quarter, rallying from a 4-1 deficit to get within one at 4-3 on goals by Curtis and Scaliti. Curtis' goal was an extra man up opportunity while Scaliti scored with 10:33 left in the second to make the score 4-3.
The Captains then went on a 6-0 scoring run, apexed by a goal from Brett Jackson with 4:08 left in the third to take a 10-3 lead.
In the fourth, Stevenson fought back and got to within four at 11-7 as Curtis, Bryant and Zick all scored. Zick scored with 7:50 left in the contest on a pass from Searing.
Stevenson heads to Catholic on Wednesday for the middle part of a three-game road swing.
