REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson Men's Hockey, seeded second in the 2024 UCHC Tournament, hosted seventh-seeded King's College this evening at the Reisterstown Sportsplex. The Mustangs would come out hot, having already scored their game-winner by the five-minute mark of the first period. Stevenson came away with a 5-1 final for their record-breaking 20th victory of the season, earning a spot in Saturday's UCHC Semifinal round.
Junior Graeme McCrory scored just 13 seconds into the first period with help from classmate Malcolm Palmer and senior Brendan Rylott. The goal was McCrory's fifth of the season while Palmer and Rylott's assists were their ninth and 12th, respectively.
Four minutes later, the Mustangs doubled their lead when senior Evan Beers scored his fifth goal of the season via classmate Zach Bannister and sophomore Blake Benson.Â
The Monarchs would score just under a minute into the second period to make things interesting, but the Mustangs were able to build their two-goal lead back by the period's end. Benson would score on the Monarchs' power-play after being broken out of the defensive zone by Palmer and junior Liam McCanney. Less than three minutes later, senior Frank Vitucci scored his ninth goal of the season on the Mustangs' own power-play while McCanney picked up his second assist of the night and classmate Kyle Lightfoot earned his first. Vitucci is up to 17 points this season while McCanney and Lightfoot total 27 and nine.
For good measure, Bannister scored the empty-netter as Benson picked up his 29th point and Dineen his sixth. Benson leads the Mustangs in points this season while Bannister and McCanney follow with 27 each.
In goal, junior Ty Outen earned his 18th victory with 22 saves, making half of those saves in the second period alone.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 20-5-1 overall and advance to the UCHC semifinal round to be played at home on Saturday, February 24th.
