Thorne hits career-high in season closer to Golden Wolves

READING, Pa. – Stevenson women's basketball (6-19, 2-12) concluded their 2023-24 campaign on the road, ending in a 69-54 decision in favor of the Alvernia University Golden Wolves (15-10, 7-7) on Saturday afternoon.
 
Managing a 3-3 tie early in the first quarter, the Mustangs trailed a little later by a close margin. A jumper from junior forward Stephenae Lawrence less than a minute in got the ball rolling, and she added another at 7:31. Seconds later, sophomore forward Tessa Boswell sunk a three, tightening a nine-point gap established by the Golden Wolves. Layups from sophomore forward Kalea Wynter at 3:42 and 2:38 brought the team past 10 points. In the final minutes of the quarter, Boswell added a layup, and sophomore forward Destiny Towns brought the game to a five-point deficit at 1:12. The first quarter ended 20-15.
 
Four minutes passed before first-year guard Elia Richardson hit a jumper on a fast break. Towns added a layup with 5:44 remaining as the Golden Wolves passed 30 points. Seeing one more chance, Lawrence brought the Mustangs past 20 with a jumper at 2:24 left on the clock. As the Golden Wolves remained successful on free throws, the hosts went to the half leading 41-21.
 
Sophomore forward Aliyah Jean-Jacques paced the Mustangs' offense with a successful free throw series and a layup in the second half of the third quarter. With 2:17 remaining, Richardson added a jumper and a free throw. With 38 seconds left, she brought the team to 30 points on a layup, as the third quarter ended 60-30 in Alvernia's favor.
 
In an early scoring chance, first-year guard Amoni Taylor sank a jumper within the first minute of the fourth quarter, and another with 7:48 on the clock. Sophomore forward Sanaa Thorne sank some late-game points with a three-pointer at 6:52 and a layup 10 seconds later, bringing the Mustangs to 40 points. Following a free throw from Taylor, Towns added a layup as the quarter's midpoint was near. Thorne and Wynter added three points on free throws before Thorne sank another three-pointer with 4:09 on the clock. Taylor followed seconds later with a layup. A final free throw from Lawrence brought the game to its final 69-54 decision in Alvernia's favor.
 
With her late-game efforts, Thorne hit a single-game career high, adding 10 total points. She also had three rebounds and two steals. Behind her, Lawrence contributed nine points with four rebounds and a steal. Taylor had eight points with two steals and two rebounds. Towns and Wynter each contributed eight rebounds.
