Box Score READING, Pa. - Stevenson Women's Hockey opened MAC play tonight at Alvernia University. Though the Mustangs scored the first goal of the game, the Golden Wolves capitalized on a five-minute major penalty and continued building momentum. Alvernia's seven-goal third period led them to their eventual 8-1 victory.
Through the first 20, the game remained scoreless with senior goaltender Olivia DeGuire coming up big with 16 stops. At the other end, the Alvernia netminder stopped both of Stevenson's shots on goal.
Sophomore Emma DeMan was responsible for breaking the stalemate, citing an assist from classmate Carleigh Barwick near the halfway point of the middle period. The goal was DeMan's second of the season, as was Barwick's assist. Alvernia took the rest of the period to achieve the equalizing goal.
A five-minute major for Stevenson gave Alvernia three goals within two minutes to pull ahead. They carried this momentum throughout the remainder of the period, scoring seven total goals in the final 20.
DeGuire finished the conference opener with 35 saves, bringing her season total to 113 through three games.
The Mustangs look to bounce back and split the series tomorrow night against the Golden Wolves. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Body Zone.
