YORK, Pa. – Stevenson women's basketball broke a nine-game loss streak in conference play against MAC opponent York College of Pennsylvania on Wednesday evening. The final score was 72-69.
Junior guard
Emori Jeselskis wasted no time getting the Mustangs on the board in the first quarter with a three pointer. Sophomore forward
Kalea Wynter found two scoring chances about halfway through the quarter. Sophomore forward
Tessa Boswell secured a three as the final minute of the quarter passed. Although the Spartans took the lead temporarily, the game was tied twice in the final minute, first at 16-16 by the Spartans and then at 18-18 by Jeselskis off a jumper with 22 seconds remaining. The quarter ended tied 18-18.
Three minutes passed in the second before Jeselskis secured a three, tightening the gap to one point. At 5:25, Wynter brought the game to one point again. A layup and free throw from junior forward
Stephenae Lawrence brought the game by two with 3:47 remaining. With the half on the horizon, Jeselskis found another three, as the game saw a one-point difference once again. The Spartans led going into the half 35-29.
Starting another quarter on high defense, the Mustangs scored at 6:57 on the clock with a jumper from Jeselskis. The Spartans persisted and widened the gap to a 10-point lead. But Jeselkis hit a three, and two layups from Lawrence tightened the gap to a three-point lead. Boswell quickly tied the game 41-41 with a three at 2:20 remaining. Erin Dixon gave the Mustangs the boost in the final seconds, despite the Spartans tying with 16 seconds remaining. The quarter ended 45-43 in favor of the Mustangs.
The final quarter saw both teams in an intense back-and-forth battle. Boswell secured a three seven seconds into play, and a layup from Lawrence brought the Mustangs to 50 points. Seconds later, Boswell added another three. While the Spartans struggled to maintain a close lead, Jeselskis tied the game 55-55 with 6:38 remaining. A free throw from her gave a temporary lead to the Mustangs. A jumper from Jeselskis and successful free throws from Wynter brought the team to 60. With four minutes left, Jeselskis secured a three, and the game became a one-point battle once again. Another lead swap was resolved by a layup from sophomore forward
Destiny Towns in the final minute. With 36 seconds remaining, Towns secured a layup, bringing the team to 70 points. As the quarter wound down, fouls ensued, giving the Mustangs two more points on free throws. The game ended in the final 72-69 decision for the Mustangs.
Jeselskis had a career-high 29 points in the victory with seven assists. Boswell had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Dixon also hit double digits with 10 points. On defense, Smith secured three rebounds and two blocked shots in the victory.
The Mustangs stay on the road as they take on the Eastern University Eagles this Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m.
