Downs Strikes Out 11 in Doubleheader Win Over Messiah

Owings Mills, Md. – The Stevenson baseball takes down Messiah 2-1 in the weekend home and home series. 

Stevenson scored a total of 15 runs on the day to take both ends of a conference doubleheader hosting Messiah University to help them win both games. The pitching was on their game only allowing four runs the entire day. The Mustangs now find themselves at an solid 8-6 (4-2 MACC) record so far this season.
 
Game 1

Stevenson started strong in the second inning with a grounder out to second base allowing senior Elliott Schilpp to advance to third and bringing senior Trevor Smoot home.
 
In the third, the Mustangs scored a run by graduate student Jonathan Brandt when junior Nick Tamberino grounded the ball out to the shortstop.
 
The squad had no signs of slowing down in the fourth as they scored an additional three runs. Graduate student Billy McAdam was hit by the Falcons pitcher, allowing Schilpp to come home and make the score 3-0. Soon after, Brandt singled out to center field advancing McAdam to second, senior Alex Russo to third and bringing graduate student Trent Smoot home. Then, Tamberino had a good eye at bat and walked, which brought McAdam to score another point for the Mustangs.
 
The Falcons were quiet until the seventh inning when they hit a fly ball out to the right field driving a run home.
 
Graduate student Sam Downs only allowed two hits in 6.1 innings of work while striking out a season high 11 batters. He notches another victory under his belt as his record currently stands at 3-1. 
 
Game 2

Junior Amani Jones and Brandt continued the scoring streak for the Mustangs starting in the first inning of game two after a single to the left side from Schilpp.
 
The Falcons were quick to strike back in the second sending a double to right center scoring them a run. Schilpp then had a fielding error, which then led to the Falcons scoring again this inning. The final run scored for Messiah was when the ball was singled to the pitcher, allowing the Falcons to score one home.
 
The Mustangs were on fire in the fourth inning. There were eight runs scored in this single inning for Stevenson. Trent Smoot began by singling out to right center, bringing Schilpp to the home plate. McAdam then had a single to left center which sent graduate student Tommy Holcomb home. With runners on second and third, Brandt singled and advanced himself to second on the throw, senior Dylan Scott and Trent Smoot found their way home, bringing home runs five and six of the inning. Jones flew out to infield driving McAdam home.
 
The Falcons pitcher hit Schilpp which allowed Trevor Smoot to advance to second, Tamberino to third, and Brandt to score his second-scored run of the game.
 
With bases loaded, Holcomb singled out to the center field and brought Tamberino home making the score a whopping 9-3.
 
The Mustangs finished the game off with a Scott walk and brought freshman Graham Sears off third and to the home plate which made the final score of the game 10-3.
 
Senior Seth Hartman won this game allowing six hits and his record is now 2-0.

The Mustangs will face Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Tuesday at 3:30 for a non-conference game. Their next MACC game will be against York on March 31 at the Owings Mills East baseball field.
