Men’s Lacrosse Upsets No. 7 Dickinson on Day One of Mustang Classic

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson men's lacrosse team slotted a 15-14 overtime victory to upset No. 7 Dickinson on day one of the Mustang Classic on Friday evening.
 
The Red Devils opened scoring on the evening with a goal with 13:57 on the clock, but the Mustangs then responded with four goals. At 10:34, Andrew Searing put Stevenson on the board with the team's first goal off a pass from Grant Zick. Griffin Gast then followed less than a minute later with Stevenson's second goal. Robbie Vanderklugt then netted the third goal for the Mustangs at 9:15 with an assist from Shane Ford, and Jack Scaliti followed at 7:38 to slot a 4-1 contest. Dickinson then netted a goal at 6:43 to make it a 4-2 game, as, Josh Brannan notched a fifth goal for Stevenson off another assist from Ford at 2:11.
 
In the second quarter, Dickinson put their third goal of the contest up at 14:01. At 11:24, Dillion Linhardt netted a goal off of Ford's third assist of the contest to slate a 6-3 game. Cam Leydig then followed at 10:03 to put away another goal for the Mustangs off a ball from Scaliti. The Red Devils then responded with two more goals, but Searing put away another goal off an assist from Ryan Coleman at 4:32. At 2:10 Dickinson put their sixth goal away, and in response Coleman put away a goal off a ball from Brannan 13 seconds remaining to make it a 9-6 game at half.
 
To start the second half, Red Devils again opened scoring on the quarter with a goal at 10:31, but less than a minute later Coleman put away an unassisted goal to put the Mustangs leading 10-7. After the Mustangs held down on defense during a two-minute man-down period, Ford put away the eleventh goal for Stevenson off another Scaliti assist at 6:47. Dickinson then took advantage of a turnover off a clear to put away a goal at 3:19 to slot their eighth goa to make it a 11-9 contest going into the fourth quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, Dickinson put away the first goal of the quarter at 14:18 to chip a one goal deficit, trailing Stevenson 11-10. At 11:38 Nicholas Mulvey netted a goal to bring the Mustang's lead to 12-10, but the Red Devils put up a man-down goal away 13 seconds later off a faceoff win to notch their eleventh goal. At 10:38, Coleman put up his third game of the night off of Ford's fourth assist, but Dickinson again responded with a fast-break goal to make it a one goal lead for the Mustangs. The Red Devils then put a goal away at 1:55 to tie the match up 13-13 and followed with another goal at 1:28 to take their first lead since the first goal of the match up. With 22 second remaining, Scaliti put away an unassisted goal to tie the game 14-14 to head into overtime.  In overtime, it was Leydig who put the game winning goal away at 1:52 to lead the Mustangs to a 15-14 upset over No. 7 Dickinson.
 
Ford led the Mustangs on attack with a five-point game, consisting of a goal and four assists. Coleman and Scaliti followed with a four-point contest. On defense, Matt Wilson led the squad with three caused turnovers, and Justin Scorese made 12 stops in goal for the Mustangs.
 
The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday night for day two of the Mustang Classic, as the team faces No. 1 RIT. Faceoff is slotted for 8 p.m.
