Mustangs Sweep Widener in MAC Bout

CHESTER, Pa. – The Stevenson men's volleyball team (7-12, 2-1 MAC) defeated Widener (10-10, 0-4 MAC) in straight sets Wednesday evening at the Schwartz Athletic Center. Set scores were 28-26, 25-20, 25-14.

The opening set was tightly contested with the teams never being separated by more than three points and would require extra points to settle a victor. The Mustangs took a three-point rally to leverage a 15-14 lead, the longest run by either team in the set. Jack Braverman added back-to-back kills in the run. The Pride overtook the lead with a 4-1 run for a 16-18 advantage. The sides traded points to the 20-23 mark, with Widener holding the slight lead. Stevenson continued to chip away, eventually tying the frame at 25 apiece on a kill from Aidan O'Brien. Tim Flanagan sent down back-to-back kills to win the set for Stevenson at 28-26.

In the second set, Widener used a 6-0 run to take an early 6-9 lead, but Stevenson responded with a 7-2 run to take the lead back at 13-11 with three kills from Flanagan in the run and an ace from Braverman. Elliot De La Torre added a kill to move the Mustang lead to 16-12. Widener narrowed the gap to 20-18, but Stevenson finished the set on a 5-2 run capped by a kill from Ryan Thenell to win the set 25-20.

The sides traded points early in the third set before Stevenson leveraged a 9-6 lead on the heels of a 4-0 run, but Widener tied the frame at nine apiece with a three point run of its own. The sides traded points until Elliot De La Torre sent down a kill to spark a three-point Mustang run, which included a kill from Jack Braverman and a block from the duo of Thenell and O'Brien, to the 15-12 mark. The Mustangs did not allow the Pride to string multiple points together the rest of the set and polished off the frame on a 10-2 run. Braverman and Thenell added two aces each in the run while Justin Novoa and Aidan O'Brien paired up for a block as Stevenson won the set 25-14.
