HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Stevenson men's volleyball team (4-6) defeated Geneva (Pa.) (3-9) in straight sets before being swept by No. 2 Juniata (10-0)
Game 1 vs Geneva (25-20, 25-13, 25-14)
The first frame was tightly contested before the Mustangs could open up a 17-11 lead following a four-point run which included kills from
Ryan Thenell and
Jack Braverman and an ace from
Elliot De La Torre. Another four-point run gave Stevenson a 21-12 lead. Geneva chipped away with an 8-3 run, narrowing the lead to 24-20 before
Ryan Thenell sent home the final kill to give the Mustangs the set 25-20.
In the second set, the Mustangs took an early 9-3 lead and never looked back. Jack Baverman riffled off four consecutive aces to set the advantage. Braverman and Thenell paired up for a block to move the lead to 15-8. The Mustamgs used a 6-1 run to take a 21-11 lead, capped off by a kill from Thenell and another ace from Braverman. Stevenson closed out the middle frame on a 4-1 run to take the set 25-13.
The third set saw just one lead change as the Mustangs used an 11-1 run, including back-to-back aces from
Minh Christensen to take 15-6 lead.
Elliot De La Torre sent down a kill to spark a four-point run for a 19-8 lead.
Ryan Thenell earned each of the last kills for Stevenson, giving the Mustangs the third set victory at 25-14.
Game 2 vs No. 2 Juniata (16-25, 17-25, 14-25)
The first set saw five ties and one lead change when Juniata stretched a 15-7 lead following a five-point run.
Ryan Thenell sent home a kill to narrow the lead to 12-18 while
Aidan O'Brien sent home a kill to move the frame to 14-21. Juniata closed the frame on a 4-1 run to win the set 25-16.
The second set was tightly contested with the sides trading runs to a 9-9 tie. The Eagles were able to gain separation with a four-point run to take a 10-13 lead. The Mustangs continued to keep the lead within reach with kills from
Jack Braverman,
Doug Hines and
Aidan O'Brien to the 15-17 mark. The Eagles used two three point runs to leverage a 23-16 lead before a
Brian Farrell kill stalled the momentum. Juniata took the final two points to take the set 17-25.
Juniata led the third set wire-to-wire, riffling off the first four points of the set and leveraging a 5-11 lead.
Aidan O'Brien notched a kill to spark a four point run which included a kill and a block from
Elliot De La Torre. Juniata moved its lead to 11-19 before Thenell could stall the momentum. However, Juniata sealed the set on a 6-2 run to take the final frame 14-25.
