McCanney’s Hat Trick Sets Record, Mustangs Down Neumann 5-2

ASTON, Pa. – Sophomore Liam McCanney recorded his first-career hat trick and added an assist to set the program's single season points record as the Stevenson men's ice hockey team defeated Neumann 5-2 Saturday night at the Ice Works.
 
The Mustangs (13-9-1, 9-6-1 UCHC) fell behind early as the Knights (6-15-0, 4-10- UCHC) secured a power play to start the game due to a protocol violation. Neumann deposited a goal just 11 seconds into the first period. Stevenson returned the favor just over two minutes later, also on the power play, when Frank Vitucci netted the equalizer at 2:20, assisted by Eric Olson and Liam McCanney.
 
The Mustangs notched their second power play goal in as many chances at 8:55 with a goal from Kyle Lightfoot. John Musella and Aidan McDowell added assists on the goal. The Knights squared the game at two a-piece at 15:49 with their second power play goal of the period from Yancy Whitaker.
 
The second period went scoreless. In the third, McCanney's first goal of the night came at the 4:44 mark, again on the power play, assisted by Frank Vitucci. McCanney added his second power play goal at the 7:38 mark with an assist from Austin Master. McCanney's hat-trick goal cam at 17:10. The goal was scored short-handed and assisted by John Musella and Malcolm Palmer.
 
Numbers and Notes
  • Liam McCanney registered a four-point night with a hat-trick to record his 35th point of the season to set the program's single-season points record. The record was previously held by Dominic Brenza who recorded 32 in the 2019-20 season.
  • John Musella added two assists, recording his second multi-point game.
  • Austin Master added an assist and has registered a point in each of his last six starts.
  • Frank Vitucci added a goal and an assist for the sixth time this season.
  • Ryan Kenny tallied 31 saves to record 11th win of the season.
What's Next
  • The Mustangs round out the season with a two-game series at Wilkes February 10-11 with both games slated for 5pm.
