OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Sophomore
Ryan Thenell added a career-high 22 kills as the Stevenson men's volleyball team (4-11) surged to win the first and fourth sets but ultimately fell 2-3 to fifteenth-ranked Marymount (Va.) (11-4, 3-1 CVC) Wednesday evening at Owings Mills gymnasium. Set scores were 26-24, 23-25, 12-25, 25-19 and 15-7.
In the first set, Marymount jumped to a 5-9 lead before the went point-for-point to the 11-8 mark. The Saints extended their lead to 10-17 with a block. Stevenson chipped away with a7-3 run to narrow the gap to 17-20 with an ace from and capped off by a block from
Elliot De La Torre. The sides traded the next five points to the 20-23. the Mustangs surged for a 7-1 run to stun Marymount and win the opening frame 26-24.
Aidan O'Brien and
Brian Farrell added two kills each in the run.
Stevenson carried its momentum to the second set, leveraging a 11-4 advantage with a four-point run capped off by a block from the trio of
Elliot De La Torre,
Justin Novoa and
Brian Farrell. Stevenson moved its lead to 17-9 with a 4-2 run before the Saints could halt the momentum. The teams traded points to the 11-19 mark before a six-point Saints run narrowed the lead to 20-17. Novoa and De La Torre paired up for another block to slow the momentum, but a 5-1 Saints run gave Marymount the edge at 21-22. Stevenson tied the frame at 23 apiece with a kill from
Ryan Thenell but Marymount added the final two tallies to take the set 23-25.
The third frame began tightly contested with six tie scores and two lead changes before Marymount could open a 7-13 lead on the heels of a six-point run. The Mustangs were only able to side-out the remainder of the frame and dropped the set 25-12.
The Saints continued their momentum in the fourth, taking the first four points of the frame. The Mustangs responded with a 5-1 run to tighten the lead to 7-8. The sides traded the next seven points before a kill from
Ryan Thenell sparked a five-point Stevenson run, which included three more blocks, to overtake the Saints at 15-12. The teams battled to the 18-15 mark where Aidain O'Brien and
Justin Novoa paired up for a block. The Saints stayed within reach to the 19-21 mark, but Stevenson closed out the set with a four-point run to win the set 25-19 and force a fifth frame.
The Saints opened a 4-9 advantage in the fifth set before Stevenson could tie two points together to move the score the 6-9. Marymount closed the set on a 6-1 run to win the set 7-15 and win the match.
