McCanney ties all-time goals record; Mustangs earn season’s first UCHC sweep

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson Men's Hockey rounded out their UCHC series with Manhattanville this afternoon. After last night's 2-1 win, the Mustangs carried the momentum over to defeat the Valiants 3-1 and earn their first conference sweep of the season.

Though the Valiants scored first in the opening period, the Mustangs were quick to get the equalizer. Junior Liam McCanney would make history with just 53 seconds remaining as he scored his 33rd career goal, tying him for the all-time goals record. The goal was McCanney's team-leading fourth of the season. Senior Evan Beers and junior Nick Dineen assisted him the effort for their fourth and third points of the season, respectively.

The second period would pass without a change in score, but senior Frank Vitucci found the back of the net in the opening minutes of the third period. Vitucci's game winner was his second goal of the season and he now totals four points. McCanney and sophomore Jack Karlsson were credited with the assists on the game-winner.

Beers would notch his second point of the game and second goal of the season with 18 seconds remaining in regulation while Vitucci earned his fourth point of the season on the assist.

Senior Eric Olson led the Mustangs in face-off wins with eight while junior Graeme McCrory followed with five.

Junior netminder Ty Outen made 28 saves in his fourth win of the season.

The Mustangs now stand at 5-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the UCHC after three straight wins.

Over the break, the Mustangs will travel to Michigan to first face the USNTDP U18 team in exhibition on Friday before playing No. 2 Adrian College on Saturday.
