Mustangs Continue Consistent Conference Play with 64-51 Win

Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson women's basketball finished on top to  Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opponent Albright College, 64-51, on Saturday afternoon in Owings Mills gymnasium.
 
Mustang guard Laci Johnson scored a season-high and career-high 26 points, topping Erin Dixon's record performance earlier in the week. Johnson also notched four three-pointers on the afternoon. Dixon herself remained solid with eight points and four rebounds. Kalea Wynter topped the team with five rebounds while Morgan Pennick notched six assists to aid in securing the conference victory.
 
FIRST QUARTER
The Lions scored early, notching a three pointer just seconds in. While the Mustangs could not overcome the Lions' lead, they pushed to close the early gap, ending the first quarter 13-11 in the Lions' favor.
 
SECOND QUARTER
The Mustangs continued to tighten the score, seeing four instances with a two-point game on the line. The Mustangs remained consistent and kept the game close, scoring a three pointer at the end of the half to take the lead 22-21, thanks to first year guard Tessa Boswell.
 
THIRD QUARTER
Bringing the energy from their previous home victory, the Mustangs scored early and often in the third, matching pace with the Lions as both teams racked up points. Johnson and Boswell each notched a three-pointer in the quarter, as the period ended 42-37 in the Mustangs' favor.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
Two of Johnson's three pointers occurred in the last quarter as the Mustangs hit the 60-point mark. The Lions made it a 10-point game with a three pointer at 2:12 remaining, but the opportunity fell away as the Mustangs notched four points to end the afternoon with a final score of 64-51.
 
NUMBERS AND NOTES
  • The Mustangs had seven three pointers in the victory, securing a season total of 55 for the team.
  • Sophomore guard Emori Jeselskis caused three turnovers on the afternoon and made three steals, tying her season total along with Maleah Smith's to 22 in turnovers and securing the lead in total steals with 18 on the season.
  • Head coach Jackie Boswell is six games away from her 100th Middle Atlantic Conference career win. Her current overall conference record is 99-79 since starting in the 2011-2012 season. Her current MAC conference record is 94-68.



UP NEXT
Stevenson improved to 5-8 overall with the victory and 4-1 in conference play. The Lions fell to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Mustangs step out of conference play one last time this season as they travel to University of Mary Washington Monday, Jan. 9 for a 6 p.m. tipoff. The Lions continue conference play as they host Eastern University on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
