ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Stevenson men's volleyball (1-1) team suffered its first loss of the season falling to Mount Union (2-0) 3-0 Saturday night at McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex. Set scores were 23-25, 12-25 10-25.
The first set was tightly contested as the teams battled through 17 tie scores and three lead changes. The Mustangs hit .333 in the frame while the Raiders hit .471. The sides traded points with 11 ties before the Raiders strung three points together for a 13-16 lead. Stevenson answered with a three-point run capped by a block from
Ryan Thenell and O'Brien. Stevenson used another three-point run to take a 20-19 advantage but the Raiders closed the set on a 6-3 run to take the opening set 23-25.
The Mustangs took the first three points of the second set but the Raiders embarked on a 11-3 run which included a six-point run.
Ryan Thenell added a kill to slow the momentum at 7-11 but the Raiders added another six-point streak to leverage a 7-17 advantage. Mount Union closed the frame on a 7-2 run for a 12-25 victory.
Mount Union hauled out to a 4-11 lead in the third set and never relinquished the lead.
Elliot De La Torre and
Jack Braverman added kills to slow the Raider's stride but Mount Union went on a 9-1 run to close the set at 10-25.
The Mustangs return to action on Saturday, January 21 to take part in the Baldwin Wallace Tournament at Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse. Stevenson will face Loras first at 2:30pm followed by Marian (WI) at 5pm.
