Rileigh Kimball totaled a career-high 12 kills as the Stevenson women's volleyball team (4-0, 1-0 MACC) picked up a 3-0 sweep of Widener (0-4, 0-1 MACC) in the MAC Commonwealth season opener for both teams Wednesday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-21, 25-18 and 25-17.
Stevenson jumped to an early 7-1 lead in the first set before trading points with the Pride to the 9-6 mark. The Mustangs then rifled off a 9-2 run to take an 18-8 advantage with kills from
Rileigh Kimball,
Giulia Viglietta and
Haley Hoover and an ace from
Molly Joyner.
The Pride used a four-point rally followed by a three-point rally to crawl back to a 19-15 deficit before a block by Joyner paused the Widener momentum.
Samantha Simmers added an ace to bring the set to 24-16. The Pride made one last run at the Mustang advantage with a five-point rally but an attack error gave the Mustangs the opening frame victory at 25-21.
The second frame was tightly contested to the 7-6 mark before a Stevenson run sparked by a kill from
Kylie DesLauriers moved the advantage to 12-6 in favor of the Mustangs. Hoover added two kills during the five-point run while Joyner dropped in an ace.
The sides traded points to the 15-9 mark before a Mustang block from
Shannon Baily sparked a three-point run to give Stevenson a 17-9 advantage. DesLauriers added a kill to move the Mustang advantage to 20-11 before rifled off a 7-1 run to narrow the lead to 21-18. The Mustangs finished the frame on a four-point run which included back-to-back kills from Baily and Viglietta to take the middle stanza 25-18.
Stevenson carried its momentum into the third set taking the first five points of the frame before jumping to at 12-4 advantage.
Rileigh Kimball added another kill to move the Mustang lead to 19-9 before the Pride embarked on a five-point rally to narrow the lead to 19-14.
Haley Hoover and
Giulia Viglietta added kills to help move the Mustang lead to 24-17 before a Widener attack error gave Stevenson the final frame to the home squad 25-17.

- Stevenson hosts a quad match with Cabrini, Goucher and Arcadia this weekend. The Mustangs will first face off with Goucher Friday September 9 at 6pm at Owings Mills Gym.
