OWINGS MILLS, Md.- The Stevenson University field hockey opened up their home slate on the new AstroTurf at Owings Mills East on a hot Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs fell short against visiting St. Mary's (Md.) in double overtime with a score of 3-2.
In a back and forth affair, the Mustangs got on the board first against the Seahawks. At the 4:39 minute mark after a penalty corner insert from Emma Gladstein, Rylee Leakway scores the very first goal on the new Owings Mills East campus.
Minutes later, the Seahawks respond to tie up the game at 7:06 following a St. Mary's (Md.) and save by Jamie Fritz. The Mustangs held possession to start the second quarter, as they were awarded two corners within the first five minutes.
Seven minutes in to the third quarter, Gladstein made a penalty stroke, to give the Mustangs a, 2-1 lead. Following the Stevenson goal, the Seahawks took control as they again tied up the game at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle as each team was able to only fire off one shot in the fifteen minutes.
In the first overtime, Stevenson started off strong taking a penalty corner within the first minute of play. A shot by Leakway was saved by the Seahawk goalie. St. Mary's got off one final shot before forcing a second overtime. In the first seconds of the second overtime, St. Mary's (Md.) scored on a penalty stroke to end the game, 3-2.
NUMBERS AND NOTES:
- Stevenson moves to 1-1 while St. Mary's (Md.) also moves to 1-1.
- Fritz made five saves in goal.
- St. Mary's held the advantage in shots 12-7.
- St. Mary's also held the edge in corners with six.
- Gladstein led the team with three shots, one goal and one assist.
