Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md.- The Stevenson women's basketball team hosted Widener for their second to last game of the regular season, Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs couldn't quite complete the comeback as they lost, 71-61.
Widener was heating up to start the game as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead following a layup. The Mustangs started to catch up after an Olivia Coleman jump shot at the 6:29 minute mark. For the next several minutes both teams traded points as the Pride led, 18-11 at the 2:24 minute mark. Widener dropped in five more points to end the quarter while Kellie Johnson put up a layup with 26 seconds remaining.
The second quarter was a bit closer as Widener totaled ten points while Stevenson added eight but the Mustangs were playing catchup. Thirty seconds into the second quarter after two Widener free throws the Pride led by ten. Emori Jeselskis sunk a three at the 6:37 minute mark with the Mustangs still trailing by ten. Three of the four final minutes were scoreless until Widener made a free with just over a minute remaining. The second quarter ended with Widener leading, 33-21.
Once the second half began, Stevenson was consistently playing catch up with a ten-point deficit to fight against. The Mustangs tallied seven points in the third quarter with a three from Morgan DeBeary and a jumper from Coleman and Aysia Ferguson. Although Stevenson had a slow third quarter, the Mustangs came back with a vengeance to end the game. The Mustangs put up a total of 33 points in the final quarter. The Mustangs scored eight straight points to start off a Coleman free throw at the 6:42 minute mark. Widener responded with two consecutive layups to bring extend their lead, 55-38. The Mustangs kept fighting back as they got back within ten of Widener following a DeBeary three-pointer. In the final three minutes, the two teams traded points. Following a Stevenson timeout with 33 seconds left on the clock, DeBeary went in for a layup. Laci Johnson sunk a three with 15 seconds remaining as Widener led, 69-61. The Pride made two final free throws to end the game following a Mustang foul.
GAME NOTES
- Coleman tallied 21 points on the day while adding nine rebounds and three steals.
- DeBeary totaled 12 points went 2-2 on three-pointers and added two rebounds.
- Stevenson shot .361 from the floor while Widener shot .390. Widener outrebounded the Mustangs, 40-32.
- The Mustangs held .385 in three-point shooting and Widener just had a .250.
