Stevenson Falls to No. 18 Johns Hopkins in Centennial/MAC Bowl

BALTIMORE, Md. – Making its eight-consecutive postseason appearance, the Stevenson football team (8-3) fell to 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins (10-1) in the Centennial/MAC Bowl Series 7-27 Saturday afternoon at Homewood field. It was the third meeting between the programs and second in the Centennial/MAC Bowl Series.
 
Stevenson Smothers hauled in five receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown while Ryan Sedgwick completed 13 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Walker led the Stevenson ground attack with 21 carries for 54 yards. Defensively, Tashan Fitzgerald recorded two sacks for a loss of 10 yards.
 
How it Happened
  • After the teams traded punts, Johns Hopkins put together a 10-play, 93-yard drive capped by a one-yard rush from game MVP Nick Seidel for the game's first score.
  • Following two more traded punts, Stevenson put a response on the board in the second quarter, marching 80 yards in 13 plays, capped off by a fourth down throw from Ryan Sedgwick to Steven Smothers for a 24-yard touchdown catch.
  • The Blue Jays answered immediately, putting together an 8-play, 87-yard drive capped with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Stevenson to Quinn Revere. The exrtra point was missed for a 7-13 JHU lead.
  • Hopkins scored again on their next possession with an 11-yard pass from Stevens to Artie Collins to put Hopkins up 7-20 with 2:42 remaining in the first half.
  • Tashan Fitzgerald picked up a sack and forced a fumble recovered by Sean Sullivan with 29 seconds remaining in the half to give Stevenson a spark at the end of the half.
  • Both defenses turned in stout performances in the third period, allowing no scores and only 71 yards of offense between the two teams.
  • Hopkins added their final tally early in the fourth when Stevens found Emmett Turner in the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown pass.
  • The Stevenson defense continued to perform well forcing four punts in the remainder of the quarter.
