York, Pa. - The Stevenson men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the fourth seeded York Spartans in the MAC Commonwealth playoff round Tuesday night.
Mustang sophomore forward Joe Nicholson scored Stevenson's lone goal, and the Spartans' Jack Mitzelfelt and Luke Nall scored for York.
The Spartans started the first half pressuring the Mustangs, registering the first three shots of the game. The fourth shot for York at 20:54 found the back of the net as Mitzelfelt gave the Spartans a 1-0 led, assisted by Tyler Howlett. The Mustangs responded quickly as they tallied three shots of their own, all sailing wide. Nicholson tied the match 1-1 at 33:52, recording his fourth goal of the season, assisted by junior midfielder Andy Portillo. The half ended with the Mustangs notching their second shot on goal, which was saved by York goalkeeper Brady Bixler, and another shot that was blocked.
York tested Mustangs' senior goalkeeper Kristian Slaby twice seven minutes into the half. The Spartans scored their second goal of the night at 52:50 coming off the foot of Howlett, his seventh of the season. Later at 72:26, Mustang first year defenseman Ryan Muroff was dealt a yellow card. Stevenson's Slaby made four second half saves to give his team a fighting chance.
The Mustangs finish their 2022 season with a record of 5-10-5. York (10-5-3) will travel to Mechanicsburg, Penn., to face the first seed Messiah Falcons in the MAC Commonwealth Championship on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m.
