OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women's volleyball (24-4, 6-1) team finished the regular season with a 3-1 victory over Messiah (18-9, 4-3 MACC) to clinch the second seed in the MAC Commonwealth Championship. Set scores were 24-26, 25-19, 22-25, 25-20.
The Mustangs used an early 6-1 run to leverage an 8-5 lead in the first set with kills from
Rileigh Kimball and
Giulia Viglietta. Back-to-back kills from
Shannon Baily followed by a kill from
Sarah Straub moved the Mustang lead to 12-8. Messiah knotted the frame at 13 a-piece with a three-point run before the Mustangs embarked on a five-point run for a 18-13 lead. During the run, Viglietta put down back-to-back kills before Baily sent home back-to-back aces.
Messiah clawed back to take a 21-23 lead on a 10-3 run. Stevenson knotted the set at 24 a-piece on kills from Baily and Viglietta before the Falcons took the final two points for a thrilling 24-26 opening set victory.
Messiah carried its momentum to the second set, riffling off a 1-6 lead before leveraging an 6-11 advantage. The Mustangs tied the frame at 12 a-piece with a four point-run which saw back-to-back kills from
Shannon Baily and block from the duo of Baily and Straub.
Stevenson overtook the Falcon lead with a 6-1 run capped by kills from
Rileigh Kimball and
Giulia Viglietta for an 18-14 lead.
Haley Hoover sent home a kill before an ace from
Hannah Naja gave the Mustangs a 25-19 second set victory.
The Mustangs opened a 6-2 advantage in the third set before the Falcons clawed back to take a a 7-8 lead. The sides battled through four tie scores and two lead changes before Messiah took a 13-16 lead, the largest margin since the 7-3 Mustang lead.
Stevenson moved its lead to 21-19 with a four-point run which included two aces from
Kayla Vaeth. Stevenson closed the frame on a 4-2 run capped off by a kill from
Shannon Baily to take the third set 25-22.
The fourth set was tightly contested with nine tie scores. Messiah garnered the first advantage, staking a 3-7 lead before the Mustangs chipped away to tie the set at 7 a-piece, using a four-point run to get there. Stevenson took a slim 10-8 lead on a three-point run but the lead was short-lived. The sides traded rallies to a 19-19 tie before Stevenson embarked on a 6-1 run to close the frame and win the set 25-20.

- Stevenson will host third seeded Widener on Wednesday, November 2 in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinals at Owings Mills Gym. Game time is to be determined.
