York Grounds Mustangs to Stay Undefeated in MAC Commonwealth

YORK, Pa.- The Stevenson University women's basketball team dropped a MAC Commonwealth contest, Wednesday evening at York College. The Mustangs fell, 58-52 to undefeated Spartans in the conference.

  • York came out strong against Stevenson as they went on a 7-0 run following a Spartan layup. 
  • Shortly after, at the 6:01 minute mark, Morgan DeBeary added a three as the Mustangs trailed, 7-3. 
  • Trisha Tellian made a layup at 2:55 to cut York's lead in half, 12-6. 
  • With a minute remaining in the first quarter, Tellian sunk two more three-pointers as Stevenson was down, 19-12 going into the second. 

  • Both teams struggled offensively at the start of the second as neither banked a shot until the 8:21 minute mark. Denia Campbell sunk a three to come within four of the Spartans. 
  • At the 4:17 minute mark, Kellie Johnson assisted, Campell for another three as York led, 23-20. 
  • Minutes later, K. Johnson tied up the game at 23 for Stevenson. 
  • With seconds remaining in the quarter, York made a jumper to lead, 27-23 going into the locker room at halftime. 

  • Stevenson got on the board first in the third quarter as DeBeary made a three to trail by one. 
  • Throughout the third quarter, both teams started to trade points back and forth. Midway through the quarter, following a Spartan foul, Olivia Coleman sunk two free throws as Stevenson kept within two. 
  • The teams continued to go back and forth as York added four before the Mustangs, Coleman added a layup with an assist from Tellian. 
  • York started to pull away at 40-32 with 40 seconds left in the third quarter. 
  • In the final two seconds, Campbell assisted Karleigh Leo for three as the Mustangs were down, 41-35. 

  • York opened up the scoring in the final frame after a Mustang foul. York started to pull away in the fourth quarter after a Spartan free throw the team was up by ten. 
  • After two missed attempts, Coleman went in for a layup at the 2:50 minute mark. 
  • York picked up two more free throws before Coleman added a layup and a free throw with Stevenson trailing, 51-45. 
  • The Mustangs fought back and came within four after K. Johnson made a free throw at the 1:25 minute mark. 
  • The Spartans put up five consecutive points as they started to pull away again from the Mustangs. With just three seconds left, Tellian put away a three but it wasn't enough as Stevenson fell, 58-52. 

  • Tellian led the Mustangs with 13 points and four rebounds.
  • Coleman posted her fourth straight double-double of the season as she added 12 points and 14 rebounds. Coleman also added two steals and four blocks. 
  • Stevenson outrebounded York, 53- 39, and added 18-second chance points. 
  • Stevenson turned the ball over 21 times giving York the opportunity to add 24 points off the turnovers. 
  • York shot .317 from the floor while Stevenson shot .293. 

  • The Mustangs are back in MAC Commonwealth action as they travel to Widener, Saturday, January 8 at 1 PM.
