Mustangs Fall in Back and Forth Affair as Elizabethtown Pulls Away Late

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.- The Stevenson University women's basketball fell 65-50 after fighting in a back and forth affair for three quarters before Elizabethtown pulled away to take the win.

  • The Mustangs got off to a 3-0 start against Elizabethtown after Morgan Pennick assisted Olivia Coleman for two. 
  • At the 3:38 minute mark, the Blue Jays took over for the lead at 8-5 following a layup. 
  • Trisha Tellian answered back with three after Denia Campbell assisted to tie it up at eight. 
  • With 20 seconds left in the quarter, Kellie Johnson picked up a steal. As the team traveled down the court, Tellian tried for three with seconds left to tie it up. Stevenson ended the quarter down, 11-8. 

  • Following a Pennick steal, K. Johnson went in for a layup but missed. Cassidy LaSaracina picked up the rebound for K. Johnson to get a second chance. Stevenson tied it up at 12 three minutes into the quarter. 
  • Elizabethtown got the lead after two consecutive layups which caused a Stevenson timeout. 
  • Coming out of the timeout, Coleman put up two to cut Etown's lead. 
  • After more back and forth between the two teams, the Blue Jays led, 20-18 after a jumper. 
  • With just a second remaining in the quarter, Maleah Smith picks up a steal after the Blue Jays put the ball in play. Smith adds two to trail 25-23 at the half. 

  • Etown broke out of the half with a layup as they continued to lead, 27-23. 
  • A minute later, Pennick answered with a layup to come within two of the Blue Jays. 
  • Tellian grabbed an offensive rebound and responded with a layup to tie up the game again. 
  • At the 4:53 minute mark, K. Johnson assisted Karleigh Leo made a three-pointer to take over the lead, 33-32. 
  • The Blue Jays responded with five more points before the Mustangs responded with another three to come within one. 
  • Stevenson kept on trading points with Elizabethtown. Etown pulled ahead at the end of the quarter to take a, 46-38 lead. 

  • Etown led, 50-38 at the start of the quarter after the Mustangs were unable to capitalize on two shots. 
  • At the 8:43 minute mark, Pennick recorded a steal for Coleman to get the go-ahead jumper after the assist from K. Johnson. 
  • Midway through the fourth quarter, K. Johnson picks up her own rebound to add a layup. Stevenson trails 55-42. 
  • Following a Mustang foul, the Blue Jays added two free throws to extend their lead by 20 over Stevenson. 
  • With three minutes remaining, Tellian puts up a jumper as the team continued to trail 62-44. 
  • The Mustangs went on a 6-3 run to close out the game but it wasn't enough as Elizabethtown won, 65-50. 

  • Coleman had a season-high 14 points and eight blocks while also adding 13 rebounds. 
  • Tellian came off the bench and added nine points with two rebounds. 
  • Pennick tallied eight points with four assists and four steals. 
  • The Mustangs shot .339 while the Blue Jays shot .443
  • Stevenson and Elizabethtown each tallied 19 turnovers. Etown was able to record 16 points off the turnovers. 
  • Etown out rebounded Stevenson 42 to 36.
  • There were a total of 12 ties and 10 lead changes throughout the game. 

  • Stevenson (4-7, 2-2) returns to MAC Commonwealth play this Wednesday, January 5th at 6 PM as they travel to York (Pa.).
