Box Score UTICA, N.Y. -- Third-ranked Utica remained unbeaten in UCHC play, overpowering Stevenson by a 5-2 count on Saturday at the Adirondack Bank Center.
Utica (16-2, 12-0) rifled three goals in the second period to pull away comfortably and weather a late charge. Brendan Rylott got Stevenson (9-5-1, 5-3) on the board with a pair of goals in the third period.
- Utica scored just over one minute into the period as Blake Holmes buried a shot for a 1-0 Utica lead. Chances were few and far between for the Mustangs as Utica owned a 14-2 edge in shots through the opening 20 minutes.
- Ryan Kenny made 13 saves in goal for the Mustangs, including a penalty kill for the visitors.
- Stevenson went to the man advantage following a hard collision into the boards. Stevenson rifled a heavy chance from the point, as the attempt flew wide.
- Stevenson used some strong defense with Blake Colman closing out on a Utica attempt in a physical start to the second period.
- A blast from the right point off the stick of Regen Cavanaugh doubled the Utica lead on the power play with 17:18 remaining in the period.
- A two-on-one chance was blistered wide by Utica as the hosts continued checking in waves. The Pioneers added to the lead with another heavy shot from the point, this time from the left blue line to triple the edge.
- The Pioneers continued applying the pressure, extending the lead to 4-0. Nick Dineen had several looks from the left wing as the Pioneers clogged up the shooting lanes with several blocks.
- Kenny made a point-blank save on a Utica breakaway chance, keeping the score at 4-0.
- Alex Rivet had a quality breakaway chance early in the third as Sean Dickson denied the chance.
- Rylott finished a shot from Kyle Lightfoot as Stevenson trimmed the deficit to 5-1. It was the fifth goal of the season for Rylott, who deflected one off the rush in front.
- The Mustangs converted with the man advantage as Rylott chipped one in front, trailing 5-2.
- Stevenson has played just twice since December 12, returning to the ice for the first time since January 8.
- Kenny finished the night with 31 saves for Stevenson.
- Lightfoot posted his fourth assist with a slick pass in front during the initial third-period tally for the Mustangs.
- Lightfoot and Dineen registered the assists on the power-play marker for the Mustangs in the third.
- The Mustangs squared off with their second opponent ranked inside the top-three nationally in three games. Stevenson recently traveled to second-ranked SUNY Geneseo on January 7.
