Mustangs Drop Conference Battle At League Leading Hood

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. -- Stevenson men's basketball fell behind and could not close the gap in a 110-78 drubbing to high-powered Hood on Wednesday night in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth play.

Hood (12-5, 9-1) earned its fifth consecutive win, keeping pace atop the MAC Commonwealth standings with Eastern following the victory. Mason Wang (33) and Evan Wang (25) combined for 58 points, once again providing a one-two punch for the Blazers, which used a balanced effort and torrid shooting from deep to run away with the conference win.

Khalil Richard posted a new career-high 28 points, taking control for Stevenson (9-7, 5-5) in the second half. Cameron Smith added 20 points for the Mustangs, who trailed by double digits at the intermission. Stevenson got back to within 10 in the second half before one final run from Hood put things out of reach for good.

  • Ronald Ayers sliced to the basket, leveling the score at two early. Both sides continued to trade baskets as Hood moved ahead, 10-7.
  • After a long triple from Smith tied the score, Jalen Jacox banked a runner in as the clock ticked down under 15 minutes. The Blazers continued their hot shooting, expanding their early lead to 17-13 as Stevenson went to its bench.
  • Hood converted on consecutive baskets, including one off a quick steal for a 25-18 advantage. Smith raced ahead for a transition bucket, part of an impressive offensive effort in the opening half for the first year, as Stevenson trimmed its deficit to 25-22.
  • Things became choppy with plenty of whistles on each side as Hood clung to a 28-22 advantage, later pushing it to a double-digit lead.
  • Richard canned a pull-up jumper, slicing the deficit to 33-26 with a timely basket. It was part of four-straight points for Richard as Stevenson used a mini spurt to get back to within one possession.
  • Hood responded with a spurt of its own, shaking off some missed foul shots to push the lead back to 39-32 with just about one minute left in the stanza. Meanwhile, Stevenson was able to keep the game relatively close thanks in large part to its efficiency at the foul line.
  • Mason Wang canned a triple following a Stevenson turnover, expanding the lead to 48-34 at the charity stripe off a double technical assessed to the Stevenson bench.

  • Hood converted the opening two baskets out of the locker room, ballooning the lead to 54-35. Stevenson responded back with a pair of mid-range jumpers, coming from Bo Wesley and Richard at around the 18-minute mark.
  • Richard began asserting himself on the offensive end as the Blazers remained in control. The Mustangs attempted to whittle the deficit, closing the gap to 12 with just under 13 minutes left in the half.
  • Nate Arrington converted inside, trimming the Hood lead to 13. Richard and Evan Wang traded three-point baskets over four possessions before Jacox finished along the left block with Stevenson down 12.
  • Stevenson continued chipping away as the Blazers used some impressive shooting to stay in front by a comfortable margin.
  • Hood eventually topped the century mark, continuing to expand the margin as the half ticked away.

  • Smith dropped in 17 points for the Mustangs in the opening half. Mason Wang, the reigning conference player of the week, poured in 22 points for the Blazers in the initial 20 minutes.
  • Hood seemingly had an answer from long range every time Stevenson threatened to close the gap, keyed by a big performance from Evan Wang in the second half.
  • The Blazers entered the contest taking over 50% of their field goals from beyond the arc.
  • Ethan Jones and Davon Jones made their return to the lineup as Stevenson continues to get closer to a full complement of student-athletes.
  • Hood has won 10 consecutive games in the series with Stevenson.
  • Hood came away with a narrow 84-82 victory over Stevenson in the MAC Commonwealth opener for both squads back in early December. The Blazers withstood a late Stevenson push in that game as Mason Wang fired in 26 points, a season-high mark at the time.

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs visit Alvernia on Saturday, January 29 for a 3:00 p.m. tipoff.
  • Hood: The Blazers host Albright on Saturday, January 29 at 3:00 p.m.
