Eleven Mustangs Record Points as Stevenson Takes Down No. 23 Mary Washington

OWINGS MILLS, Md.- The Stevenson women's basketball team showed up Monday evening in Owings Mills Gymnasium as the Mustangs defeated No. 23 Mary Washington, 62-60.

  • Mary Washington started off the scoring in the game with a jumper at the 9:55 minute mark. Olivia Coleman put up a layup to tie things up with a spin move to the basket at 8:13. 
  • Following a Kellie Johnson steal down court, Morgan Pennick assisted Coleman for a jump shot. With another Eagle possession, Morgan DeBeary picked up a steal shortly after. 
  • With less than five minutes remaining in the quarter, Maleah Smith added a steal as Coleman put up another two points to take the lead at 6-4. 
  • At the 2:13 minute mark, K. Johnson put the ball back into play after a missed shot for Smith to pick up the rebound and then add a layup to lead by one. 
  • Karleigh Leo made the first three of the game to extend the Mustangs lead, 12-9 with just over a minute remaining. 

  • Mary Washington and Stevenson started off the second quarter tied at 12. To start off the quarter both teams traded points, DeBeary sunk a three at the 8:04 minute mark to lead, 17-14. 
  • Denia Campbell had a steal down court which turned into a fast break for the Mustangs as Laci Johnson assisted Campbell on a wide-open layup. 
  • At the 3:59 minute mark, Michelle Mesquita added Stevenson's fifth steal of the game. Mesquita went in for a layup as the Mustangs led, 23-17. 
  • Mary Washington ended the half with a buzzer-beater layup to lead by one going into the locker room. 

  • The Mustangs started off the third quarter strong as they took a 31-26 lead following a K. Johnson layup. 
  • The Eagles overtook the lead as they sank a three at the 5:19 minute mark just before K. Johnson sunk a three of her own to retake the lead, 36-34. 
  • With the game tied at 38, Aysia Ferguson added a free throw at the 1:14 minute mark. 
  • Both teams ended the quarter trading fouls, as Stevenson led, 41-40 at the end of the third. 

  • After a missed three, DeBeary picks up the offensive rebound go to in for a layup. Stevenson led, 47-43. 
  • After more back and forth L. Johnson put down a three to tie it up at 51 at the 4:52 minute mark. 
  • Less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Campbell makes two free throws as UMW leads, 58-57. 
  • With 44 seconds remaining, Coleman records two big blocks for the Mustangs as Stevenson trails by one. 
  • Three seconds remaining in the game, K. Johnson adds a big layup and a free throw to give Stevenson a 62-60 lead. 

  • Stevenson and UMW last played in the 2011-12 season as members of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). 
  • UMW had won all 15 prior meetings with Stevenson before Monday's matchup. 
  • Coleman led the team with 17 points, nine rebounds, and six blocks. 
  • DeBeary added 11 points while K. Johnson totaled ten points, seven rebounds, and three steals. 
  • Stevenson shot 47.7% from the floor while holding Mary Washington to 36.4%
  • The Mustangs held on to the lead for a total of 22 minutes. 
  • It was a high fouling game as Stevenson totaled 23 personal fouls; there most since December 1, 2021, against Hood. 
  • The Mustangs also recorded nine steals and eight blocks. 

  • Stevenson gets back into MAC Commonwealth play as they travel to Hood on Wednesday at 6 PM.
