Coleman Reaches 1,000 Career Points as Mustangs Fall to Messiah

OWINGS MILLS, Md.- The Stevenson University women's basketball team couldn't overcome a big Messiah third quarter as Stevenson fell, 68-57 in a MAC Commonwealth matchup.

In the fourth quarter at the 1:39 minute mark, senior Olivia Coleman made her 1,000th career point with her 11th point in the game. 

  • Coleman started off the scoring of the game with a layup at the 8:52 minute mark. 
  • Stevenson came within one at 5-4 after a Messiah foul, with Morgan Pennick making both free throws.
  • The Mustangs overtook the lead at 9-8 midway through the first quarter as Aysia Ferguson assisted Morgan DeBeary for three. 
  • Throughout the rest of the quarter, Stevenson and Messiah traded points. Laci Johnson tied up the game at 15 all with just over a minute remaining. 
  • Under a minute remaining, Ferguson pushed her way through for a made jump shot which drew a Messiah foul. The Mustangs led, 18-15. 

  • Stevenson kept it rolling at the start of the second as they led, 25-19 after a DeBeary three-pointer. 
  • At the 4:38 minute mark, Ferguson recorded a steal for the Mustangs to run down the court. After a missed Stevenson shot, L. Johnson rebounded and put up her own layup as the Mustangs continued to lead, 28-21. 
  • The Falcons went on an 8-0 run after a jumper to take over the lead at 29-28. 
  • Messiah took over the lead going into the locker room at halftime as the Falcons put up a buzzer-beater layup to lead, 31-28.

  • Denia Campbell sinks a jumper to start off the second quarter as Stevenson trails, 33-30. 
  • Messiah started to pull away before Kellie Johnson picked up a three at the 6:54 minute mark. 
  • Following a Messiah layup, the Mustangs were forced to take a timeout as the Falcons extended their lead by ten. 
  • K. Johnson picked up a steal for the Mustangs to give DeBeary the layup opportunity as Stevenson trailed by seven. 
  • To close out the third quarter, K. Johnson banked two free throws with the Mustangs behind, 54-43. 

  • Stevenson opened the final quarter unable to make a basket until three minutes in as Ferguson made a layup. 
  • Messiah went up by 16 points at 64-48 after two consecutive Falcon layups with four minutes remaining in the game. 
  • With three minutes left Coleman sunk four free throws to make the score, 66-52. 
  • Just over a minute remaining in the game, Coleman made another free for her 1,000-career point. 
  • With just two seconds on the clock, Campbell makes the final layup of the game as Stevenson falls, 68-57. 

  • Coleman led the Mustangs with 13 total points, six rebounds, three steals, and four blocks. 
  • DeBeary added 11 points and two steals while Ferguson added 11 points from the bench along with four rebounds and three assists. 
  • Stevenson shot .364 from the floor while Messiah held an impressive .525. 
  • The Falcons outrebounded the Mustangs 40 to 24. 

  • Stevenson will travel to Albright this Saturday, January 15 at 3 PM for a MAC Commonwealth game.
