Johns Hopkins Eases Past Mustangs in Season Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Visiting Johns Hopkins led 27-3 at halftime and cruised to a 53-18 non-conference football victory Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.  The game marked the season opener for both teams.

  • Johns Hopkins (1-0) marched 70 yards on 16 plays on its opening drive and a seven-yard completion with 5:45 on the clock put it up 6-0 after the PAT try failed.
  • Stevenson (0-1) got into Blue Jay territory on its second drive of the game but the drive was halted at the 45.
  • The Blue Jays went 83 yards in four plays capped by a 30-yard TD completion to make it 13-0 with 1:44 remaining in the opening frame.

  • Stevenson got on the board with 2:28 left before halftime when a 12-play, 70-yard drive was capped by a 33-yard field goal by Brody Campbell.
  • Senior quarterback Ryan Sedgwick had three completions of over 10 yards on the drive, including two for 28 yards to Amir Moore.
  • Johns Hopkins scored two touchdowns in the final 2:28, taking advantage of a Mustang interception with 55 seconds on the clock, and took a 27-3 lead into halftime.

  • The guests went 75 yards in five plays on the opening drive of the second half to increase their lead to 33-3.
  • On Hopkins' second drive, Blue Jay quarterback Ryan Stevens was intercepted on 4th-and-3 by Garston Banks at the Stevenson 26.

  • Sedgwick hooked up with Cory Jones for a 64-yard completion 53 seconds into the fourth to make it a 33-10 game.
  • Johns Hopkins countered with a 45-yard field goal by Kyle Battles on its next drive to make it 36-10 with 11:14 left.
  • After a Mustang fumble at their own 31, the Blue Jays tacked on a 36-yard field goal with 8:26 on the clock.
  • Hopkins added another touchdown with 7:33 left to up its lead to 46-10.
  • Brandon Booze caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Sedgwick with 2:30 left to cap a 10-play, 79-yard march.  A two-point conversion completion from Sedgwick to Darian Littlejohn made it 46-18.
  • A 23-yard touchdown completion by the Blue Jays with 1:18 left closed out the scoring.

  • Hopkins outgained Stevenson 596-451, including 506 yards passing.
  • Sedgwick finished 30-47 passing for 382 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.
  • Steven Smothers caught 10 passes for 139 yards, while Littlejohn had seven grabs for 80 yards.
  • Moore added five catches for 45 yards.
  • Kevin Joppy carried nine times for 53 yards on the afternoon.
  • Stevens finished 31-46 passing for 483 yards and five touchdowns for the Blue Jays.
  • Five Mustangs finished with five tackles apiece, with Mario McIntyre recording an 11-yard sack.
  • Banks had five stops in addition to his interception, while Marvin Manassa had a pass breakup to go with his five tackles.

  • Stevenson hits the road next Saturday to face RPI in a noon kickoff in Troy, New York.
  • The next Mustang home game is Saturday, September 25, when Stevenson hosts Lycoming in a noon Middle Atlantic Conference contest.
