Mustangs Sweep Dickinson in Tournament Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson women's volleyball team rolled to a straight-set triumph on Friday night inside Owings Mills Gymnasium over Dickinson.  

Stevenson, which won the match in set scores of 25-10, 25-14 and 25-22, bumps to 6-0 on the young season. Dickinson, which had a late run in the third set, drops to 4-1 in 2021.  

  • Stevenson got off to a quick start, zipping ahead 6-1 after kills from Darian Dildy, Piper Connors and two straight for Sophia Eckerd. Kayla Vaeth added a service ace for the Mustangs in the early surge. 
  • Dickinson whittled the Stevenson lead to three at 9-6 before the Mustangs took control with 13 straight points. Connors laced down four kills for the Mustangs, while Shannon Baily and Lauryn Davis also had big swings in the long run.  
  • Stevenson secured the first set with three consecutive kills, taking the early lead with a 25-10 triumph.  

  • The Mustangs rolled along to a 5-1 lead at the onset of set two.  
  • Dickinson worked its way back to within one at 9-8 before the Mustangs answered with eight of the next nine points for a 17-9 edge.  
  • Stevenson placed down kills in five of the next six points, jumping ahead 22-14.  
  • Following an attack error from Dickinson, Connors capped the set with a kill, lifting Stevenson ahead 2-0. 

  • Seven kills and a service ace pushed the scintilating Mustang attack to a 10-0 lead in set three. Hailey Hoover, Bailey, Pipers and Blevins all chipped in with kills for the Mustangs in the initial outburst.  
  • The visitors did not go quietly, responding with a run of their own. The Red Devils took a 16-15 lead.
  • Tied 20-20, the Mustangs scored three straight points to go up 23-20, and a Davis kill closed things out. 

  • Connors finished with 14 kills on .357 hitting, while Baily had 12 kills, hitting at a .500 clip.
  • Dilby recorded kills on seven of her eight swings.
  • Mackenzie Blevins handed out 21 assists and added nine digs.
  • Vaeth had a team-high 11 digs.
  • Olivia Simon finished with nine digs and eight assists.
  • Stevenson held Dickinson to -.009 hitting while it hit .214.

  • Stevenson is in action twice on Saturday, hosting DeSales at 10 am and Mary Washington at 4 pm at Owings Mills Gym.
