Mustangs Open Spring Season With 28-10 Triumph Over Alvernia

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University football team jumped out to a 28-0 lead early in the second half en route to a 28-10 win over Alvernia Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

  • After an Alvernia (0-1) three-and-out, Stevenson (1-0) used a 10-play, 48-yard drive capped by a three-yard keeper by junior quarterback Ryan Sedgwick to go up 7-0 with 2:52 to go in the first.
  • The big play on the drive was a 23-yard completion to Steven Smothers as the Mustangs faced 2nd-and-19 at their own 43.
  • Stevenson forced another Golden Wolves' three-and-out and the Mustangs got the ball back with 1:19 to go.

  • Sedgwick found Brandon Booze for a 10-yard touchdown completion 1:46 into the second quarter to cap a six-play, 54-yard drive.
  • After another Alvernia three-and-out resulted in a Mustang drive starting at their own 46, Stevenson needed just two plays to score as Sedgwick found Darian Littlejohn for a 50-yard TD completion with 11:01 left before halftime.

  • With the first possession of the second half after winning the toss and deferring, Stevenson went up 28-0 on a one-yard scamper by Kevin Joppy with 13:27 on the clock.
  • The Mustangs started the drive at their own 45 following a 19-yard kickoff return by Littlejohn, then Sedgwick and Littlejohn hooked up for a 47-yard completion to get down to the Alvernia 8.
  • Alvernia got on the board with a 10-play, 56-yard drive capped by a 27-yard field goal with 9:23 on the clock.

  • The Golden Wolves pulled to within 28-10 with just under 10 minutes to go as a 23-yard touchdown completion capped a nine-play, 74-yard drive.
  • After a Stevenson three-and-out, Alvernia got the ball back with 7:27 to go but the Mustang defense forced a three-and-out with a Tristan Dye tackle for a loss and a sack by Mario McIntyre.
  • The Mustangs ran out the final 5:16 with an eight-play, 65 yard drive that saw Joppy rush for 57 yards.

  • Sedgwick finished 16-25 passing for 212 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
  • Joppy carried 28 times for a career-best 181 yards and a touchdown.
  • Littlejohn and Booze each had five receptions, with Littlejohn recording 133 receiving yards in his Mustang debut.

  • Ethan Joseph led the Mustang defense with seven tackles, while Cory Nowlan had six stops and Dye five.
  • The Mustangs finished with six tackles for a loss, including three sacks.
