Furious Second Half Comeback Falls Shy for Mustangs

READING, Pa. - The Stevenson University men's basketball team worked an 18-point second-half deficit down to one,but host Albright held on for a 79-71 MAC Commonwealth victory Friday night at the Bollman Center.

  • Albright (5-2, 4-1 MAC Commonwealth) staked itself to an early 12-4 lead just over five minutes into the game.
  • The Lions extended their lead to 14, 20-6, at the 11:49 mark on a pair of Sam Majekodunmi free throws.
  • A basket by Jordan Guerrero gave the hosts their largest lead of the first half, 37-21, with 4:11 left before halftime.
  • A 9-0 spurt by Stevenson (3-5, 3-5) capped by a basket by KJ Holton cut the lead to seven, 37-30, with 48 seconds remaining.
  • Norman Hughes had a steal and basket and was fouled for a conventional three-point play at the 2:52 mark of the run.
  • Albright took a 39-30 lead into the locker room.

  • Albright outscored Stevenson 15-6 over the first six-plus minutes of the second half to build an 18-point cushion, 54-36.
  • Stevenson countered with an 18-4 run to pull within four, 58-54, with 8:05 left after Damon Koskovich sank a pair at the line.
  • Hughes had 13 of the 18 Mustang points, hitting three of his four three-point attempts and going 4-4 at the free throw line.
  • The Mustangs held the Lions to one field goal during that stretch.
  • After Albright scored on its next possession, Koskovich pulled the Mustangs back within three, 60-57, when he connected on a three-pointer.
  • Trailing 65-58, back-to-back threes by Hughes pulled the Mustangs within one with 5:12 on the clock.
  • The hosts used a 7-2 spurt to push the lead back to six with 2:06 to play, 72-66, and Stevenson got no closer than four points the rest of the way.

  • Hughes totaled 21 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, finishing 6-12 behind the arc and 8-18 from the floor overall.
  • Holton was the other Mustang to finish in double figures as he tallied 11 points on 4-5 shooting
  • Bo Wesley recorded eight points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots, while McKale Williams added seven points, with five coming from the line.
  • Stevenson shot 40.7% for the contest, finishing 8-22 behind the arc and 19-27 at the free throw line.
  • Albright shot 43% overall, 5-16 from three and 18-27 at the stripe.
  • The Lions held a 36-33 rebound advantage and generated a 22-5 lead in second chance points.

  • Stevenson closes out the regular season next week when it takes on Lebanon Valley College. The Mustangs host the Dutchmen next Thursday at 7 pm before hitting the road the following night for a 7 pm tip.
