Lions Pull Out Last-Second Victory, Hughes Leads Mustangs With 17

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Visiting Albright took its only lead of the second half with 1.2 seconds remaining and held on for an 81-80 MAC Commonwealth men's basketball victory over Stevenson Thursday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

  • Stevenson (3-4, 3-4 MAC Commonwealth) used an early 10-2 run capped by an Ethan Jones layup to open up an 18-10 lead just over seven minutes into the first half.
  • After Albright (4-2, 3-1) cut the lead to five, 20-15, five straight points capped by a three by Norman Hughes put the Mustangs up 10, 25-15, with 11:08 on the clock.
  • Another Hughes triple 8:12 before intermission extended the lead to 12, 31-19.
  • The lead fluctuated between seven and 12 until a basket by Albright's Cory Simmons cut it to five, 38-33, with 1:32 on the clock.
  • With 33 seconds left, a Hughes layup made it 41-33, which would be the halftime score.
  • Stevenson forced 13 Albright turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

  • The Lions outscored Stevenson 15-9 over the first five minutes of the second half to pull within one, 50-49.
  • An Evan Joseph conventional three-point play and a Hughes three-pointer pushed the lead back to seven with 13:39 remaining.
  • After Albright whittled the lead to two, 61-59, back-to-back threes by Hughes made it a 67-59 game with 7:45 to go.
  • Albright cut the lead to one, 77-76, on a conventional three-point play by Jordan Guerrero with 1:04 left.

  • Majekodumni found Guerrero for a backdoor layup with 1.2 seconds remaining to give the Lions their first lead of the second half.
  • After a timeout, a long heave by the Mustangs fell short.

  • Hughes led the Mustangs with a season-high 17 points off the bench, going 5-7 behind the arc and 6-11 from the floor.
  • Joseph posted his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds and also added four assists and four steals.
  • McKale Williams tallied 10 points, while Jalin Jordan notched nine points and five rebounds.
  • Bo Wesley was 4-5 from the floor and added eight points.
  • Stevenson shot 50% (13-26) from three and 42.9% overall, while Albright was just 5-10 from three and 44.9% overall.
  • The Lions, who held a 45-34 rebound advantage, went 14-16 at the free throw line while Stevenson was 7-13.
  • The Mustangs committed a season-low 11 turnovers.
