Mustangs Hold Off Eastern for 65-61 Victory

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson men's basketball team held off Eastern University to post a 65-61 victory in the Middle Atlantic Conference Crossover Challenge Friday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  Junior McKale Williams led the Mustangs with 20 points.

  • The game got off to a slow start, with the Eagles (0-9) holding a 14-10 lead with just over nine minutes to play in the first half.
  • A conventional three-point play by Ray Nedurumalli kicked off an 15-2 run that put Stevenson (5-6) up 25-16 with just over a minute to go before halftime
  • A Williams three-point play at the 2:35 mark made it 21-16.
  • A Christian Rodriguez layup, followed by two Williams free throws, closed out the run.
  • Terron Bacon hit a three for Eastern with seconds remaining to make it 25-19 at halftime.

  • A Cameron Sapienza three-pointer just over three minutes in put the Mustangs up eight, 32-24.
  • Five straight points by Eastern pulled the guests within three just over a minute later.
  • Evan Joseph's basket with 13:02 left put the Mustangs in front 41-31.
  • Stevenson took its largest lead, 46-34, with 10:47 left on two free throws by Merlon Devine.
  • Eastern used a 14-1 run to go up 48-47 with 5:42 to go on two William Blet free throws.
  • The lead was short-lived as Nedurumalli sank a pair at the line with 5:26 on the clock to put Stevenson back in front.
  • Stevenson extended its lead to six, 54-48, with just under four minutes remaining.
  • A basket by Williams with just under a minute put Stevenson in front 63-56.
  • Eastern scored the next five points to make it a 63-61 game following a layup by Joshua Grant with four seconds left.
  • Williams sank two free throws to seal the win for Stevenson.

  • Williams posted his second 20-plus point game of the season, going 7-11 from the floor.  He also matched his career high with eight rebounds.
  • Joseph reached double figures for the seventh time in eight games, tallying 10 points and six rebounds.
  • Nedurumalli had a career-best nine points, going 3-5 from the floor and sinking all three of his free throw attempts.
  • Norman Hughes scored seven points off the bench, while Devine and Bo Wesley each chipped in with six.
  • Stevenson shot 39.6% but was 3-13 behind the arc.
  • The Mustangs did take eight more trips to the free throw line and went 20-28 while the Eagles were 13-20 at the stripe.
  • Eastern shot 36.8% for the contest and was 6-23 from long range.
  • Stevenson outrebounded Eastern 38-36.
