Mustangs Earn Extra Point in Shootout Versus Lebanon Valley

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - The Stevenson men's ice hockey team scored twice in the third period while first year Evan Beers scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Mustangs skated to a 2-2 tie in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contest Wednesday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex. The Mustangs earned an extra conference point with the shootout victory.

  • The Mustangs (7-2-1, 4-1-1 UCHC) dominated play early on, recording the first 10 shots on net.
  • Right before the first whistle of the game at the 5:17 mark, Connor Matsinger, fired a shot off the pipe for Lebanon Valley.
  • The Dutchmen (2-1-2, 2-1-2 UCHC) earned the first power play opportunity of the contest but it lasted just 14 seconds as the visitors were whistled for a penalty.
  • Stevenson only had eight seconds of its 14 second power play before going back into the penalty box.
  • Lebanon Valley recorded eight of the final nine shots of the period.

  • The hosts were called for a penalty at the 2:23 mark, which led to a Dutchmen goal just nine seconds later.
  • Stevenson had to kill off another two penalties with sophomore Ryan Kenny making three stops.
  • Junior Chad Watt had a shorthanded breakaway but Aidan Richardson made a pad save.
  • The Mustangs had their first full power play opportunity at the 12:06 mark but managed just one save that was knocked aside by Richardson.

  • Stevenson had an early power play opportunity but it was the Dutchmen who recorded a pair of shorthanded shots.
  • On the man advantage, first year Blake Colman fired a shot off the left post.
  • Less than a minute after the power play expired, Colman fired a shot from the point that found the back of the net to tie the game at, 1-1. Watt and first year Zach Egber picked up the assists.
  • Just 1:47 later, sophomore Austin Master gave the hosts the lead at the 6:18 mark, getting a helper from first year Anthony Starzi.
  • With 6:35 remaining, Skyler Pugh tied the game with a shot from the point.

  • The Mustangs had the first three shots of the extra period, including a shot by Beers in the opening minute.
  • Kenny stopped both shots he faced before senior Martino Picariello nearly gave the hosts the victory in the closing seconds.

  • Stevenson outshot Lebanon Valley, 32-27, including 4-2 in the overtime period.
  • The Mustangs were 0-for-4 on the power play while the Dutchmen finished 1-for-7.
  • Both Colman and Master netted their second goals of the season.
  • Egber picked up his first career point with his assist.
  • Kenny finished with 25 saves.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, March 20 when the Mustangs host a UCHC contest versus Chatham beginning at 7:00 p.m.
