Watt Scores Late Power Play Goal as Mustangs Down Wilkes

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson men's ice hockey junior Chad Watt netted a power play goal with 2:08 remaining in regulation as the Mustang erased a first period deficit en route to a 3-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory Friday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • Both team's recorded a shot on net in the opening minute of play but it was Wilkes (1-2-0, 1-2-0 UCHC) who controlled the early tempo with five of the first seven shots.
  • The Mustangs (4-2-0, 1-1-0 UCHC) earned the game's first power play attempt at the 6:46 mark yet could not get a shot on net as the Colonels recorded a shorthanded shot attempt.
  • At the 11:02 mark, Stevenson was whistled for its first penalty before sending a second into the box just nine seconds later.
  • With 13 seconds remaining on the five-on-three power play, the Colonels found the back of the net as Devon Schell gave the visitors the 1-0 lead.
  • Wilkes recording the final four shots of the period during even strength play.

  • After Wilkes started the period with two of the first three shots, the Mustangs recorded three of the next four.
  • Just past the midway point of the period, Stevenson went on the power play but the lone shot by first year Eric Olson was knocked aside.
  • The Mustangs went back on the power play just 47 seconds later, this time finding the back of the net on a goal from the point by senior Aaron Murray.
  • Sophomore Austin Master and junior Ryan Patrick picked up the assists.
  • The hosts went on the penalty kill for the second time in the game with 2:48 remaining. Junior Luke Benitez recorded a shot on a odd-man rush but Michael Paterson-Jones made the pad save.

  • The Colonels came out firing the first two shots of the period in the opening minute but sophomore Ryan Kenny saved both shots.
  • At the 12:13 mark, the Mustangs went on the penalty kill with Kenny making a save on the lone shot on net.
  • With 2:16 remaining, Stevenson went on the power play and needed just eight seconds before Watt finished on a rebound attempt by first year Mac Lowry. First year Blake Colman had the secondary assist.
  • Paterson-Jones was pulled with 1:45 remaining in regulation for an extra skater but just 12 seconds later, Patrick scored on an empty net from the neural zone on a helper from first year Brendan Rylott.
  • The Mustangs were whistled for back-to-back penalties, giving Wilkes a six-on-three advantage with the extra skater but Kenny made three saves to close the game.

  • Both team's finished with 27 shots, with the Stevenson outshooting Wilkes, 22-15 over the final two periods.
  • The Mustangs finished 2-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.
  • It is the second consecutive win for Stevenson in the series, which Wilkes leads, 4-3-0.
  • Watt netted his team leading fourth goal of the season while Patrick scored his third goal in the last two games.
  • Murray also found the back of the net for the second straight game.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, March 12 when the Mustangs host a UCHC contest versus Neumann beginning at 5:00 p.m.
