Women's Basketball Picks Up First Win of the Season Against Eastern

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Seniors Oliva Coleman, Alexa Sanmartin and junior Kellie Johnson each scored in double figures on Thursday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium as the Stevenson women's basketball team edged MAC Commonwealth newcomers Eastern University, 49-45.

  • Eastern (0-5, 0-5 MACC) opened the game with two Kay Wulah free throws, Stevenson (1-4, 1-4 MACC) got on the board when Olivia Coleman converted a layup at the 7:27 mark.
  • Two Eagles layups and an Alexa Sanmartin layup at the 5:24 mark, set the game to be a 6-4 game with the Eagles leading for the next three minutes.
  • A Kellie Johnson free throw at the 4:40 mark, brought the Mustangs within one of Eastern, 6-5.
  • The Eagles scored the final four points of the first quarter to lead 10-5.

  • The second quarter was scoreless until the 7:43 mark when Johnson had a three-point play for the Mustangs.
  • 1:25 later, Denia Campbell brought Stevenson within one with a free throw.
  • Sanmartin put the Mustangs on top 12-10 with a three with 5:44 on the clock.
  • At the 5:21 mark, Brynn Schmidt tied the game by responding with a layup.
  • The lead switched back from a Wullah basket and Coleman quickly responded with a layup to tie the game, 14-14.
  • Sanmartin hit another three for the Mustangs at the 3:43 mark, putting the Mustangs up 17-14.
  • The Eagles took the lead back for the next two minutes until a Morgan DeBeary layup, followed by a Maleah Smith layup with 1:02 left in the first half to put Stevenson up 22-20 at halftime.

  • Jaelyn Harris opened the second half with a three pointer for the Eagles to take the lead by one, 23-22.
  • The next five minutes of the quarter, the Mustangs held a 8-7 run over Eastern when Morgan Pennick hit a three to tie the game, 30-30.
  • Stevenson used a 6-0 run capped by a fast break layup by Denia Campbell to go up 36-30 with 1:18 left.
  • A Schmidt free throw and Viki Kneis layup in the final 28 seconds got the Eagles within three of the Mustangs.

  • 45 seconds into the final quarter, a Johnson layup extended the Mustangs lead to five.
  • At the 8:28 mark, Sanmartin hit her third three of the night to lift the Mustangs 41-33. 
  • Stevenson extended the lead to 10, 45-35, on a Coleman basket with 6:46 to go.
  • At the 4:54 mark, a Wulah three got the Eagles within five of the Mustangs. 40 seconds later, a Harris three brings the Eagles within three of the Mustangs.
  • At the 3:20 mark, a Harris layup got Eastern within one of the Mustangs.
  • In the remaining seven seconds of the game, a Coleman free throw and two DeBeary free throws lifted the Mustangs to win their first game of the 2021 season, 49-45.

  • Stevenson edged Eastern in shot percentage, shooting 34.0% while the Eagles shot 33.3%.
  • The Mustangs went 11-20 at the free throw line while the Eagles went 6-11.
  • Eastern outrebounded Stevenson 38-36.
  • The game featured nine ties and six lead changes.
  • Coleman put up 10 points for the Mustangs and eight rebounds.
  • Sanmartin posted 12 points and three three-pointers for the Mustangs.
  • Johnson had 10 rebounds and three steals on the night.
  • Thursday's game was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

  • The Mustangs travel to St. Davids, Pennsylvania tomorrow, Friday February 26 for another match-up against the Eastern Eagles for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
  • Next week, Stevenson will travel to Albright on Thursday, March 4 before hosting the Lions on Friday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
