Third Period Comeback Falls Short as Mustangs Drops UCHC Opener at Chatham

VALENCIA, Pa. - Stevenson men's ice hockey junior Ryan Patrick scored twice in the final 1:19 but the third period comeback fell short as the Mustangs dropped a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) contest, 4-3, versus Chatham Thursday afternoon at Frozen Pond Arena.

  • The Mustangs (3-2-0, 0-1-0 UCHC) took the early lead just 4:17 into the contest as senior Aaron Murray scored his first goal of the season on assists from senior Houston Wilson and junior Chad Watt.
  • Following the goal, the Cougars () recorded four straight shots on net, but sophomore Ryan Kenny kept all four in front.
  • Chatham tied the game with 6:00 remaining, as Lucas Rothe scored on the third consecutive shot on net.
  • With 1:55 remaining in the period, the Mustangs earned the game's first power play after the hosts were whistled for too many players on the ice but the visitors registered just one shot on net.

  • The Cougars took the lead just 1:51 into the period as Cory King netted his second goal against Stevenson this season.
  • Stevenson recorded six of the next seven shots but all were saved by Ricardo Gonzalez.
  • Rothe netted his second goal of the game, giving the hosts a two-goal lead, at the 8:30 mark. Gonzalez picked up the secondary assist.
  • The Mustangs fired a pair of shots on net in the final 30 seconds of the period, but both were stopped in front.

  • Early in the period, the Mustangs went on their second power play but both shots on net by Patrick and first year JJ Fecteau were saved.
  • A few seconds after the penalty expired, first year Caden Halverson fired a shot that hit off the pipe.
  • At the 6:49 mark, Michael Lamison gave the Cougars a 4-1 lead, Stevenson's largest deficit of the season.
  • The Mustangs pulled Kenny in favor of an extra skater late in the period, leading to this first goal of the game by Patrick with 1:25 remaining. First year players Blake Colman and Eric Olson picked up the assists.
  • Just 21 seconds later, Patrick found the back of the net again on assists from Murray and Olson, cutting the deficit to just one.
  • Stevenson was able to get one additional shot in the final minute but it was stopped by Gonzalez.

  • Stevenson outshot Chatham, 43-39, including 16-7 in the third period.
  • The Mustangs were 0-for-2 on the power play but were not whistled for a penalty for just the second time in program history.
  • The win for the Cougars is the first in the nine-game series.
  • Three of Murray's eight career goals have come versus Chatham.
  • For Patrick, it is his first career multi-goal game.
  • Kenny finished with 35 saves.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, February 26 when the Mustangs host Wilkes in a UCHC contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
