Box Score REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Highlighted by goal from junior Ally Gibson and senior Angelica Saluzzo and a 27-save performance by senior Annika Carlander, the Stevenson women's ice hockey team held on for a 2-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over Chatham Sunday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.
- The Cougars (1-1-0, 1-1-0 UCHC) had an early power play after a hooking penalty just 1:07 into the contest but Carlander stopped both shorthanded shots she faced.
- Just one minute after the visitors power play expired, the Mustangs (1-1-0, 1-1-0 UCHC) went on the player advantage with both Saluzzo and junior Tea Ferrara putting shots on net.
- Right before the midway point of the period, senior Trinity Barcless had her shot hit off the shoulder of goaltender Lily Rogers before a high-stick put the puck outside the offensive zone.
- Stevenson had a second power play opportunity at the 12:55 mark but its lone shot was knocked aside by Rogers.
- In the closing seconds of the period, Chatham had a three-on-one breakaway but Carlander applied enough pressure as the shot hit off the pipe.
- Neither team found the back of the net in the period nor was whistled for any penalties.
- Chatham outshot Stevenson, 11-6, in the frame, including the first six shots on net of the period.
- The Mustangs had four blocked shots in the period, including two by Gibson.
- Stevenson went on its third power play of the contest at the 4:20 mark but Rogers a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless.
- Junior Nikki Kendrick fired a shot on the power play that hit off the pads of Rogers before Ferrara had a rebound attempt in close.
- At the 8:05 mark, Gibson gave the hosts the lead as she carried the puck up the right side and fired a low angle shot that hit off a Chatham defender and into the back of the net.
- Just past the midway point of the period, the Cougars were whistled for a penalty and the Mustangs elected for the power play opportunity over a penalty shot.
- The Mustangs needed just one minute before Saluzzo found the back of the net after putting home a rebound off a shot from sophomore Karly Aguirre. Sophomore KaliJo Zagula picked up the secondary assist.
- Chatham got back within one just 23 seconds later as Allison Corser-James scored in close after a shot from the point was deflected down.
- With 4:51 remaining, the Cougars thought they had tied the game at 2-2, but the goal was called off due to a high-stick.
- Rogers was pulled in favor of an extra skater with 36 seconds remaining before Chatham had a six-on-four advantage with 15.9 seconds left after a penalty against the Mustangs.
- The Cougars were not able to get a shot off in the closing seconds after Kendrick won the defensive zone face-off.
- Chatham outshot Stevenson, 28-23, including 23-15 over the final two periods.
- The Mustangs went 1-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
- It is the first goal for Saluzzo since January 25, 2019 and first career goal on home ice.
- Carlander picks up her 10th career win.
- Stevenson returns to action on Friday, February 26 when the Mustangs travel to Neumann for a UCHC contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
