Messiah Downs Mustangs Saturday Afternoon

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University women's basketball team hosted the Messiah Falcons on Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium. The Mustangs fell to the Falcons 78-48.

  • Messiah (4-0, 4-0 MACC) held Stevenson (0-4, 0-4 MACC) scoreless for the opening eight minutes of the game 15-0.
  • At the 1:51 mark, an Olivia Coleman layup put the Mustangs on the board, 15-2.
  • The Falcons scored the next five points of the quarter, with five seconds remaining, Maleah Smith put up a layup to make it a 20-4 game.

  • Baskets by Denia Campbell and Alexa Sanmartin opened the second quarter to come within 14 of the Falcons, 22-8.
  • In the next six minutes, the Falcons held a 20-10 run over the Mustangs.
  • To cap the first half of the game, at the 00:00 mark, Sara Warthen hit a three to shorten the Falcons lead by 17. 

  • Following two Eleana Eckley free throws for the Falcons, a Morgan Pennick three got the second quarter started for the Mustangs to make it a 42-26 game.
  • The Falcons scored the next 13 points to extend their lead by 28.
  • Pennick made one free throw at the 3:58 mark for the Mustangs.
  • Messiah scored the final six points heading into the final quarter, leading the game, 61-27.

  • One minute into the final quarter, Leah Springer puts a three on the board for the Falcons extending their lead by 37. Coleman responded a minute later with a layup.
  • The Mustangs held a 16-10 run in the next eight minutes when Warthen made a three for the Mustangs with 1:21 left to play.
  • 15 seconds remaining in the game, Sanmartin capped the game with a three for the Mustangs making it a final score of 78-48.

  • The Falcons shot 47.8% for the game while the Mustangs shot 35.6%.
  • The home and visitor teams each collected five three-pointers.
  • Messiah and Stevenson tied in rebounds, each grabbing 33.
  • The Mustangs went 11-15 for free throws, as the Falcons went 9-11.
  • Pennick and Coleman each had 10 points.
  • Johnson stole one from the Falcons and had nine rebounds.
  • Sanmartin tallied seven points and four rebounds.

  • Next week, Stevenson will host Eastern University at Owings Mills Gymnasium at 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 25 before traveling to Eastern on Friday, February 26 for a tip-off time at 7:00 PM.
