Mustang Women Fall Short Against Messiah

Grantham, Pa. - The Stevenson University women's basketball team trailed Messiah in a tight final quarter to fall to the Falcons by four, 49-45. Senior Denia Campbell posted 14 points for the Mustangs while senior Olivia Coleman grabbed 14 rebounds.

  • Senior Olivia Coleman got things started for Stevenson (0-3, 0-3 MACC) as she put up a layup 1:44 into the game. Leah Springer matched the game for Messiah (3-0, 3-0 MACC) 13 seconds later with a layup.
  • Following a steal by Kellie Johnson, at the 7:17 mark, Two Denia Campbell free throws gave the Mustangs a two-point lead over the Falcons.
  • With 1:08 left in the first quarter, Brynne Deluzio hit a three to come within one-point of the Falcons to make it a 9-10 game. Deluzio followed with 35 seconds left to make it a tied game at 10-10 with one made free throw.
  • In the remaining 20 seconds, Brooke Breinich and Sidney Stutzman each posted a layup to get Messiah up by four.

  • The Falcons opened the second quarter with a Stutman basket at the 8:56 mark.
  • The game remained scoreless for two minutes until a layup by Morgan DeBeary at the 6:20 mark.
  • The Falcons held the Mustangs scoreless again until Johnson made a basket with 36 seconds remaining in the half, Messiah scored eight points leading up to the end of the half and took a 24-14 lead.

  • In the opening three minutes of the second half, the Mustangs held a 5-3 run over the Falcons and came within eight of Messiah at 19-27.
  • Leah Springer extended the lead for the Falcons by 10 with a layup at the 5:26 mark.
  • Johnson's three at the 4:30 mark put Stevenson back within seven of Messiah. Followed by a DeBeary layup 30-seconds later brought the Mustangs within five.
  • Messiah capped the third quarter with the final seven points and took a a 36-24 lead into the fourth.

  • 19 seconds into the final quarter, Campbell made two free throws to bring the Mustangs back within 10, 26-36.
  • At the 6:53 mark, an Alexa Sanmmartin three brought the Mustangs within five.
  • An Olivia Coleman basket at the 5:58 mark got Stevenson within three of the Falcons to make it a 37-40 game.
  • A Campbell three tied the game at the 4:37 mark. Springer responded for the Falcons with a basket 22 seconds later.
  • Coleman tied the game back up, 42-42 with a jump shot.
  • Messiah scored the next seven points on the floor by making it a 49-42 game.
  • 00:00 on the game clock, Campbell finished the game with a three to come within four of the Falcons, 45-49

  • Stevenson shot 28.8% from the floor while Messiah shot 38.2%. The Mustangs held a 43-38 rebound average.

  • Campbell lead Stevenson with 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
  • Coleman grabbed 14 rebounds for the Mustangs.

  • Stevenson hosts the Falcons again on Saturday, Feburary 20 at 1:00 p.m. at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
  • Next week, Stevenson will host Eastern University at Owings Mills Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Eastern on Friday, February 26 for a tip-off time of 7:00 p.m.
