Mustangs Score Four Unanswered En Route to 4-1 Victory at Chatham

VALENCIA, Pa. - Highlighted by four different goal scorers, the Stevenson men's ice hockey team scored four unanswered goals en route to a 4-1 non-conference victory over Chatham Saturday afternoon at Frozen Pond Arena.

  • The Mustangs (2-0) were whistled for the first penalty of the game just 47 seconds into the contest but the hosts were only able to record one shot, which was stopped by sophomore Ryan Kenny.
  • At the 14:09 mark, Cory King got Chatham (0-2) on the board on assists from Tristan Simm and Jake Reed. Simm recorded two points in the weekend series for the Cougars.
  • Stevenson earned its first power play attempt with just under two minutes remaining but it lasted just 35 seconds after the visitor were called for its second penalty of the game.
  • With 14.8 seconds remaining in the period, junior Chad Watt found the back of the net for the second straight game on an assist from first year Eric Olson.

  • After three straight shots on net by the hosts, first year Caden Halverson fired a shot off the pipe.
  • Sophomore Anthony Starzi netted his first goal in a Mustang uniform on the power play at the 11:01 mark, scoring on the power play. Juniors Ryan Patrick and Luke Benitez picked up the assists.
  • The Mustangs ended the second period just as they did the first, scoring a late goal, this time by Benitez with 20.7 seconds remaining. Watt and Olson were credited with the helpers.

  • Stevenson scored early in the final frame, as senior Matt Cappucci scored his first goal since October 27, 2018. Patrick and first year Blake Colman recorded the assists.
  • The Cougar's Ricardo Gonzales recorded three straight saves as sophomore Austin Master recorded two shots and Benitez a third.

  • Stevenson outshot Chatham, 31-23, and won 29 of the 55 face-offs.
  • Kenny finished with 22 saves in his first start of the season.
  • The Mustangs improve to 8-0-0 all-time versus the Cougars, having outscored Chatham 39-15.
  • It is the fourth time in the eight-game series that Chatham has been held to just one goal, including in both games this season.

  • Stevenson opens United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play when the Mustangs face Lebanon Valley for a home-and-home series.
  • The Mustangs travel to Hershey, Pa. on Friday, February 19 for a 7:00 p.m. start before returning home on Saturday, February 20 for a 5:00 p.m. puck drop.
