Fourth Quarter Pushes Pride Over Stevenson in Home Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's basketball senior, Alexa Sanmartin finished with a career-high 16 points. The Mustangs ran the Pride to a tight final quarter but fell, 62-53 Friday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

  • Widener (2-0, 2-0 MACC) left Stevenson (0-2, 0-2 MACC) scoreless for almos four minutes holding a six point lead until Oliva Coleman put up two good free throws for the Mustangs at the 5:50 mark.
  • At the 3:09 mark, Kellie Johnson put up a layup for the Mustangs off a rebound to tie the game, 8-8.
  • To cap a 5-2 run for the Pride, Erin Phelan placed a layup in with 26 seconds left to give Widener at three point lead heading into the second quarter, 13-10.

  • The visitors got the second quarter started with a three-pointer by Jordan D'Ambrosio at the 1:02 mark.
  • Sanmartin brought the Mustangs back within three when she converted a three to make it a 18-15 game.
  • Kyra Schneck for the Pride responded with a layup to bring back Widener's five point lead.
  • With her second three-pointer of the quarter, Sanmartin brought the Mustangs within four at the 5:49 mark.
  • To round out the first half of the match-up, in a 8-7 run both teams ended with layups in the final minute to head into the second half with the Pride leading 33-25.

  • The Mustangs led a 7-6 run in the opening five minutes but the Pride held an eight point lead over the Mustangs.
  • Morgan DeBeary and Sanmartin both posted a layup and a basket at the 4:00 mark to bring Stevenson back within four of the Pride, 39-25.
  • In the final three minutes of the quarter, the Mustangs led a 7-4 run, a Maleah Smith free throw tied the game 45-45 heading into the final quarter.

  • Opening the final quarter, Laila Abdul-Rahman posted a layup to give Stevenson a two point lead, 47-45.
  • Tieing the game at the 47-47, Erin Phelan put up a basket for the Pride, followed by a Gianna Samuels three to lift Widener over the Mustangs by three.
  • The Pride held a 6-3 run heading into the final two minutes leading a 56-51 game over Stevenson.
  • At the 1:07 mark, Nicole Barnes posted a three for the Pride to give an eight-point lead for the Mustangs, 30 seconds later D'Ambrosio put up a layup and DeBeary responded for the Mustangs with a layup with 24 seconds left in the game.
  • 16 seconds left to play, D'Ambrosio made on free throw to end the game 62-53 for the Pride.

  • Stevenson finished 22-66 from the field while the Pride were 23-56.
  • The conference match-up featured three lead changes and three ties.
  • Stevenson outrebounded the Pride 45-38.
  • Stevenson made 17 trips to the free throw line while making six and Widener made 27 trips to the free throw line and making 11.
  • Sanmartin had a career-high 16 points, with four rebounds and two assists.
  • DeBeary also posted a career-high 10 points on two rebound and one assist.
  • Coleman put up nine rebounds for the Mustangs.
  • Johnson had four steals for Stevenson on the night.

  • The Mustangs are set to host Messiah College on Thursday, February 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Owings Mills Gymnasium before traveling to Messiah College on Friday, February 19 for a match-up at Jordan Court in the Hitchcock Arena at 7:00 p.m.
