Big Fourth Quarter Lifts Mustangs Over Alvernia

OWINGS MILLS, Md.- With neither team able to create much separation in the first half, Stevenson was able to pull away in the final quarter as the Mustangs put up 23 points to win, 66-58.

Olivia Coleman registered 17 points for Stevenson and Trisha Tellian put away 12 points from the bench. 

  • Alvernia started off strong with an 8-2 lead after a 3-pointer, then Denia Campbell responded with a layup to cut the lead, 8-4. 
  • The teams started to trade points as neither could get a definitive lead. Midway through the quarter, Laci Johnson made a jumper to close in on Alvernia's lead. 
  • Another jumper from L. Johnson tied up the two teams at 12 with less than three minutes in the quarter. 
  • Tellian closed out the quarter with just three seconds on the board as she banked a three to tie up the game at 18 going into the second quarter. 

  • Aysia Ferguson was first to put up points in the new quarter as Stevenson took a 20-18 lead. 
  • The Golden Wolves went on an eight-point run to take over the lead at 26-20. 
  • Following a steal by Campbell, Campbell ran the court the make a layup to come within one of Alvernia. 
  • Coleman closed out the quarter for Stevenson with two made free throws following a Golden Wolves foul to lead 31-30 going into the intermission. 

  • Ferguson once again opened the quarter shooting for the Mustangs as she put down two to extend their lead. 
  • Coleman posted up two points at the 6:38 minute mark and then following an Alvernia missed layup, Coleman made a jumper to lead, 39-35. 
  • With four minutes left in the quarter, Alvernia took over after making three. The Golden Wolves held a 40-39 lead. 
  • With just one second on the clock, Emori Jeselskis assisted Ferguson on a jump shot as Stevenson trailed, 50-43 going into the final quarter. 

  • Fifteen seconds into the final quarter, Kellie Johnson sunk three to come within four of Alvernia. 
  • Down the stretch, Stevenson had ample opportunities to bank shots but couldn't get the ball in. With four minutes left in the quarter, an Alvernia foul gives Campbell the opportunity for two shots. 
  • At the 5:24 minute mark, Campbell assists Coleman for two as Stevenson trailed 53-50. 
  • With five minutes left, Alvernia and Stevenson kept things close. Tellian hit a three as the Mustangs kept chipping away at Alvernia's lead. 
  • A Coleman layup at the 2:24 minute mark gave the Mustangs a 59-58 lead. 
  • With just a minute remaining in the quarter K. Johnson made a three to extend the lead, 63-58. 
  • Alvernia struggled to put more points on the board in the final seconds as three Golden Wolves' fouls led to three more points for Stevenson. 

  • Stevenson shot a season-best 40.0% from the floor, placing two in double digits. 
  • The Mustangs posted 18 points from their bench, including 12 from Trisha Tellian in 19 minutes. Tellian went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals. 
  • Stevenson poured in 23 points in the fourth quarter against the Golden Wolves, the most in a quarter this season for the Mustangs. 
  • Six players posted five points or more in a balanced effort for the Mustangs, while five different players had a block on the defensive end. 
  • Campbell has played 30 or more minutes three times this season, including each of the first two contests of conference play. 
  • The Mustangs clamped down on Alvernia from long range, holding the Golden Wolves to just one three-point basket on nine first-half attempts.
