Balanced Mustangs Handle Neumann

REISTERSTOWN, Md. -- Stevenson men's hockey had five different goal scorers in a 5-3 victory over Neuman in UCHC on Saturday night inside the Reisterstown Sportsplex. 

Stevenson (4-2-1, 3-2-0) opened up a 4-0 lead midway through the second period, later adding an empty-netter as Neumann (2-5-1, 2-3-1) attempted to rally. 

  • Stevenson racked up 11 shots in the opening period, taking the early 2-0 lead. 
  • Despite chances for both sides, neither squad could break through offensively for the first half of the period. 
  • Not long after a Neumann power play expired, the Mustangs took advantage as Kyle Lightfoot ripped home his second goal of the season at 14:24. 
  • Just over one minute later, the Mustangs doubled the advantage as Austin Master found the back of the net for the third time this season. Anthony Starzi and Liam McCanney registered assists on the goal as Stevenson titled the ice soundly in its favor. 
  • Lightfoot labeled a hot off the post with just about three minutes left in the period as Stevenson continued to dictate possession heading into the intermission. 

  • Just under four minutes into the second, Stevenson raced ahead 3-0 on a tally from Starzi coming off the rush. 
  • Ryan Kenny and the Mustang defense limited the looks for Neumann, allowing the offensive onslaught to continue. Ryan Patrick rang one off the pipe as part of a flurry of chances for Stevenson on the power play. 
  • Brendan Rylott cashed in on the Mustang's fourth goal of the night with Evan Beers and Luke Benitez earning assists on the goal. 
  • The Mustangs successfully killed off a Neumann power-play attempt, but the Knights eventually broke through with a goal from Hunter Litman at 17:44. 

  • The Knights pushed to get back into the game, opening the period with several chances before ultimately finding the back of the net again 6:43 into the frame. 
  • On a 5-on-3, the Knights got back to within one following a Bary Kneedler goal at 11:53. 
  • The Mustangs found themselves shorthanded again just a few minutes later, able to hold Neumann at bay. 
  • After pulling the goalie, Patrick was able to seal the game with the empty-netter following a faceoff win by Benitez. 

  • There was no shortage of players in the penalty box on Saturday, as the teams combined for 16 total infractions. 
  • Starzi and Master registered a goal and assist each, accounting for four total points on the night. 
  • Kenny made 21 saves between the pipes for the Mustangs.
  • Stevenson earned its eighth-straight win in the all-time series against Neumann, dating back to 2018. 
  • Benitez won a game-high 12 faceoffs for the Mustangs. 
  • Malcom Palmer earned a +3 rating on the night to pace all players. 
  • Starzi led the team in assists entering the contest, adding his first goal of the season. In total, Startz has assisted in five of the team's seven games this season. 
  • Stevenson has limited Neumann to three goals or less in each of the past four meetings. 
  • Neumann has recorded a point in each of the last three games entering Saturday's contest.
