Mustangs Fend Off Washington (Md.) in Overtime

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Stevenson men's basketball built a big lead into the second half, but had to hold off a frenetic charge from Washington (Md.) in an 89-87 overtime win here Saturday inside Owings Mills Gymnasium. 

Stevenson (4-1) notched its fourth consecutive win, squandering a 15-point lead in the second half that sent the contest to overtime. KJ Holton raced ahead for the game-winning bucket with 9.1 seconds remaining and the final attempt for Washington (Md.) (1-3) missed the mark as time expired. 

Khalil Richard pumped in a game-high 26 points for the Mustangs, with 17 coming between the second half and overtime. Meanwhile, Cameron Smith added a career-high 21 points with Bo Wesley adding a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Sam Corrao canned five three-point field goals on his way to a team-high 20 points, while Kedrick Frink notched 14. 

  • Stevenson outscored the Shoreman by a 9-3 margin early, including buckets from Smith, Ethan Jones, Richard and Wesley. Off an offensive rebound by Wesley, the Mustangs rotated the ball to the corner, where Smith canned an open triple for a 12-3 edge. 
  • Smith sunk another long-range shot from nearly the same spot for a 19-3 edge, as Stevenson pushed the ball forward and settled its offense after forcing a turnover, prompting a Shoremen timeout. 
  • Ethan Sommer converted a three of his own for Washington (Md.), hitting a shot with a hand in his face to slice the deficit to 23-13. 
  • The Shoremen began to find their footing on offense, while Stevenson continued to own the offensive glass. Richard pulled up from the short corner, extending the Stevenson lead back to double figures at 29-19. Davon Jones buried a pull-up jump shot, coming off another offensive board, at the 5:33 mark. 
  • Stevenson led 34-27 out of a timeout, Smith converted in the lane with a dunk off a slick feed from Ethan Jones. Smith continued his strong offensive play as the Mustangs led 42-33 at the half. 

  • Ethan Jones charged down the left block for two, coming off a tap-out from Wesley, for a 44-34 lead. The Shoremen buried a straightaway triple, cutting the Stevenson lead to 44-38. 
  • Following a Mustang timeout, Stevenson worked the ball inside to Wesley, who finished the post-up move in the paint. Wesley dunked the next time down the floor, expanding the lead to 48-38 off a feed from Jalen Jacox
  • Richard scored on consecutive possessions for the Mustangs, who strung together some stops defensively to push their lead to 52-40. 
  • Cameron Sapienza fired one into the middle as Wesley converted through contact at 11:51, finishing the three-point play at the line. The Mustangs raced ahead in transition off a blocked shot as Sapienza charged in for the bucket, moving the Stevenson lead to 60-47. 
  • KJ Holton converted back-to-back driving layups for the Mustangs, who continued to clamp down on defense. Stevenson maintained its lead, pushing the advantage to 11 with just about five minutes remaining. 
  • Wesley hustled back to pin the ball against the rim on an impressive shot block, giving the Mustangs possession on the held ball. The Shoremen converted a big three-pointer, slicing the Stevenson lead to five. 
  • Richard responded with a fading jump shot, converting with an acrobatic finish, before Washington (Md.) canned another three. 
  • Leading 76-72, Stevenson committed a foul to put Nick Romeo at the line, who made both. On the inbounds, Richard was fouled, heading to the line for a one-and-one as the shot resulted in a held ball and possession to the visitors. 
  • After missing a three, Stevenson grabbed the rebound and drew the foul. Holton made the second of two attempts, lifting the Mustangs in front at 77-74. 
  • The Shoremen tied the game on the next trip up the floor and missed the potential game-winner. 

  • Dilyn Becker stepped back for a jump shot before Richard responded with a clutch trey to put the Mustangs up one, 80-79.
  • A pair of Shoremen foul shots sliced the Stevenson lead to 81-80 before Smith lined up a triple. 
  • Things remained close with under one minute remaining in the opening overtime session. Off a turnover, the Shoremen buried a triple to tie the score at 87 with 16.1 seconds left. 
  • Holton got the friendly roll on the quick counter for what proved to be the game-winning bucket. 

  • The game concluded a busy Pride of Maryland Classic slate inside Owings Mills Gymnasium on Saturday, with all eight NCAA DIII programs in the state competing at Stevenson. Goucher and Salisbury opened the day, followed by Hood and McDaniel, then St. Mary's and Johns Hopkins took the floor before the overtime clash between the Mustangs and Shoremen. 
  • The Mustangs held a 47-29 advantage in the rebounding department, dropping in 25 second-chance points and 44 points in the paint. 
  • Wesley had three blocks and added some big plays on the offensive end as well. 
  • For the night, Stevenson shot 52% from the floor, while the Shoreman converted 11 shots from beyond the arc to climb back into the game. 
  • Stevenson put its nation-leading defensive laurels on full display as Washington (Md.) hit just one of its first 10 shots. Meanwhile, Stevenson shot over 50% from the floor in that span to build a 19-3 lead. 
  • Smith paced the Mustangs in the opening half with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor, netting a new career-high before the half expired. 
  • The Mustangs owned a 19-4 edge in second-chance points over the opening half, part of a 14-2 advantage in offensive rebounds for the Mustangs. 
  • Washington (Md.) played in consecutive overtime games for the first time since the 2017-18 season.
