Mustangs Pull Away in Second Half to Secure First Win of the Season Over Goucher

TOWSON, Md. – Stevenson women's basketball placed three players in double digits as the Mustangs pulled away from Goucher for a 63-51 victory on Wednesday evening.

  • Both sides started off slow but Goucher began to pull away first with a 9-3 lead five minutes into the first quarter. 
  • Trisha Tellian sunk a three with just a little over two minutes left in the quarter as the Gophers led, 14-8. 
  • With just eight seconds left, Denia Campbell closed out the quarter with a layup to come within four of Goucher. Stevenson trailed 16-11 going into the second quarter.

  • Tellian racked up 11 points in the first six minutes of the second quarter. Tellian sunk three 3-pointers in a row to bring the Mustangs within two of Goucher. 
  • Goucher answered back with a three of their own still leading with a score of 29-25. 
  • At the 2:20 minute mark, Tellian continued rolling as she put away another three to tie up the game at 29. 
  • Morgan Pennick made a layup with 17 seconds left in the quarter to go into halftime, 33-31. 

  • The Mustangs took over for their first lead of the game after a three made by Laci Johnson. Stevenson took a 40-36 lead. 
  • Stevenson closed out the quarter with the final four points to extend their lead to 47-38. 

  • The Mustangs started off the final quarter on a 6-0 run to make it 53-38. 
  • A jumper from Aysia Ferguson gave the Mustangs a 20-point lead with 3:54 left in the quarter. 
  • Goucher slowly tried to claw their way back to Stevenson as they came with 12 at 63-51 but couldn't get closer as the game came to a close. 

  • Stevenson went 8 for 22 on 3-pointers with five coming from Tellian. 
  • Tellian racked up 19 points, four rebounds, and went 5-6 on 3-pointers and 7-11 on field goals. 
  • Kellie Johnson totaled 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals. 
  • Campbell put up ten points, four rebounds, and a steal. 
  • The Gophers totaled 51 rebounds while the Mustangs had 41. 

  • The Mustangs take the weekend off and return to the court next week as they travel to Salisbury on Tuesday, November 23 at 6:00 PM.
