Mustangs Come Back to Defeat Messiah in Five

MECHANICSBURG, Pa.- The Mustangs fought back to a 3-2 conference win over Messiah, Wednesday evening at Hitchcock Arena.

  • Messiah started off taking the first two points of the match following two kills. The Falcons kept gaining momentum as they took a 12-7 lead over the Mustangs. 
  • The Mustangs took the next three consecutive points following two Messiah attack errors and a service ace from Kayla Vaeth
  • Stevenson continued to keep close to Messiah as the two teams traded points. 
  • A kill by Darian Dildy put the Mustangs within one as they trailed 18-17. 
  • Messiah tacked on the next three points to extend their lead, 21-17. After that Stevenson regained control of the set to win, 27-25. Mackenzie Blevins sealed set one with a service ace. 

  • Set two started off similar as the two teams went back and forth with Messiah in the lead at 5-4. 
  • In a dominating fashion, the Mustangs took the next seven points to take the 11-5 lead. 
  • A kill by Blevins doubled Stevenson's lead, 12-6. 
  • Messiah came back to add three points in a row late in the set to tie, 18-18. 
  • The Mustangs added four points in a row to make it, 23-19 following a kill by Dildy, two Falcon attack errors, and a service ace from Vaeth. 
  • Stevenson won set two, 25-20. 

  • Set three started off somewhat slow as neither team really had control. Stevenson put on three points to take the lead at 9-6. 
  • In the middle of the set, the Falcons took control with five points in a row, to take the lead, 16-12. 
  • The Mustangs kept close as they took the next three points following a kill by Sophia Eckerd to come within one at 16-15. 
  • Stevenson couldn't keep up and come in with more than one and ended up falling, 26-24. 

  • Set four saw Stevenson start off with a 6-4 lead after they tallied three points in a row. 
  • Messiah added four consecutive points to come within four at 11-7. 
  • A kill by Dildy and then by Eckerd brought the Mustangs within two. 
  • Stevenson then tallied off five points in a row following two Falcon attack errors. The Mustangs led, 20-19. 
  • Stevenson couldn't seem to hang on at the end as Messiah took set four, 26-24. 

  • The final set was a change of pace, as the Mustangs took over to take the first four points. 
  • Messiah then picked up two points to make the score, 4-2. 
  • Stevenson took the next six points following a lot of Messiah attack errors to help decide the Mustangs 15-6 win. 
  • Dildy had the final kill of the game to seal the Mustangs 3-2 win over Messiah. 

  • Blevins tallied 12 kills (.243) while adding 18 assists, three service aces, five block assists, and 11 digs. 
  • Eckerd added 13 kills while hitting .250. 
  • Dildy totaled eight kills and nine block assists. 
  • Messiah held the edge in kills 58 while Stevenson totaled 49. 
  • The Mustangs have won the last 15 meetings. 
  • Stevenson moves to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in the MAC Commonwealth while Messiah falls to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in the MAC Commonwealth. 

  • The Mustangs return home this Saturday, October 9th for another tri-match as they host Catholic at 11 am and Virginia Wesleyan at 3 pm.
