Mustangs Pull Away from Alvernia for Third Straight Win

Box Score

READING, Pa. -- Stevenson football used a big surge in the waning moments of the second quarter before pulling away for a 35-6 victory against Alvernia on Saturday afternoon.

Stevenson (4-5, 3-3 MAC) posted its third-straight victory in Middle Atlantic Conference play, while Alvernia (0-8) continues the search for its first triumph of the season. The Mustangs again received contributions in all three phases, including 156 receiving yards for Darian Littlejohn, three more touchdown passes from Ryan Sedgwick and a pair of rushing touchdowns for Brandon Walker.

Defensively, the Mustangs held Alvernia off the scoreboard in the second half, recording five total sacks with a fumble recovery, while the special teams unit also blocked a punt. Meanwhile, Mario McIntyre set a new single-season program record for sacks (9.0) with two more on Saturday.

  • Stevenson forced a fumble on the opening drive of the day for Alvernia as Marvin Manassa hopped on the football to complete the turnover. The Mustangs moved down the field with an eight-play drive, keyed by a 32-yard completion from Sedgwick to Cory Jones. Walker scored from two yards out on the next play, pushing the Mustangs ahead 7-0 following the extra point with 10:11 remaining.
  • After holding Alvernia, the Mustangs got the ball back near the end of the quarter. Stevenson got another chunk play as Sedgwick connected down on a completion along the right hash to Littlejohn. After consecutive rushes, Stevenson drove the ball to the Alvernia 39 as the opening quarter expired.

  • The Mustangs continued driving down the field with passes to Littlejohn for nine yards and Smothers for 13 yards, placing the ball at the Alvernia 15. Following a Stevenson false start, Alvernia's Jamel Fleming gathered in a tipped pass in the end zone, returning the interception out to the 41-yard line.
  • On the Alvernia drive, the Golden Wolves worked the ball into Stevenson territory on a 20-yard catch and run. The Golden Wolves set up in the red zone following a pair of first-down plays, later capping the drive with an 18-yard passing strike from Kevin Washington to Neeko Scurlock. Following an exotic extra-point formation that prompted a Stevenson timeout, the Golden Wolves pushed the PAT attempt wide left, making the score 7-6 with 8:52 left.
  • On the ensuing kickoff, Alvernia blooped a ball just beyond the front line before being whistled for an unsportsmanlike conduct flag on the return. The flag handed the Mustangs prime starting field position at the Alvernia 43. Stevenson tossed a pair of incompletions on second and third down, including a pass breakup for the Golden Wolves, before punting away for a touchback.
  • The Mustangs limited Alvernia to 14 yards on a 3rd and 15 attempt, receiving the ball back after a delay of game on fourth down. Stevenson started its drive with an 11-yard completion to Littlejohn, who later made three consecutive first-down grabs of 6, 14 and 22 yards on the left side.
  • On the ninth play of the drive, Sedgwick zipped a 10-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Brandon Booze as Stevenson surged ahead 14-6 with 3:54 remaining in the half.
  • Stevenson charged in to record a blocked punt for the second-straight game, this time collecting the ball at the Alvernia 16. Two plays later, Sedgwick found an open Littlejohn on the outside for an 11-yard touchdown completion. Brody Campbell stepped into the extra point, pushing the Stevenson lead to 21-6 with 2:15 left in the quarter.
  • Stevenson used timeouts to get the ball back following an Alvernia three and out, but coughed the ball up on the first play of the drive. A holding penalty moved Alvernia back into its own territory before punting away to close out the half.

  • Stevenson received the football to begin the second half, returning the kick up the right sideline down to the Alvernia 15. Following a penalty, Steven Smothers raced around the edge on an end-around for 12 yards. Stevenson was out of field-goal range, and sent a long fourth-down pass incomplete to the endzone.
  • The Mustangs continued adding to its lead on a three-yard scamper for Brandon Walker, pushing the edge to 28-6. Jones hauled in a 12-yard pass, while Tylor Blake added a reception of 21 yards down to the Alvernia three-yard line, setting up the touchdown run.
  • Stevenson raced in for a third-down sack as Alexander Brown-Collie got to the QB for a loss of nine, forcing an Alvernia punt. Stevenson began the drive right around midfield, and took advantage with a 51-yard touchdown bomb from Sedgwick to Littlejohn. Campbell split the uprights for the PAT as Stevenson led 35-6.

  • Alvernia punted away on the first play of the fourth quarter, but received an automatic first down on a roughing the punter foul. Stevenson rebounded defensively with a sack, forcing another punt.
  • On a fourth-down play, Sedgwick went to the endzone for Jones as the ball landed incomplete through contact.
  • With the score soundly in favor of the Mustangs, Stevenson began working in its reserves on both sides of the football. The Mustangs were able to melt the clock away with a heavy dose of rushing attempts from Maurice Hammond

  • The Mustangs forced Alvernia into six punts during the first half, limiting the Golden Wolves to just 119 yards of total offense.
  • Stevenson held Alvernia to 31 rushing yards on the day, limiting the Golden Wolves to 132 yards of total offense.
  • Sedgwick has fired 10 touchdown passes over the last three games, going 15-23 with 266 yards through the air on Saturday.
  • The rushing attack of Walker and Hammond combined for 153 yards.
  • McIntyre surpassed the previous single-season record for sacks held by Cory Pietrzyk in 2015.
  • Littlejohn racked up 105 receiving yards in the opening half with a touchdown. Meanwhile, Booze secured a touchdown grab in his third different contest this season.
  • Littlejohn made four receptions on the Stevenson second-quarter scoring drive, totaling 53 yards and four first downs. In total, Littlejohn accounted for 53 of the 67 total yards on the nine-play drive.
  • Stevenson knocked off Alvernia, 28-10, during the spring 2021 semester with a contest at Mustang Stadium last April.

  • Stevenson: The Mustangs host King's on Saturday, November 6 at noon.
  • Alvernia: The Golden Wolves visit FDU Florham on Saturday, November 6 at noon.
